It’s Not Just For Men!
Someone recommended this book to my husband and he recommended it to me. At first, based on the title, it didn’t seem appealing for women. He kept referring to it, and how good it was, so I finally started reading it.It is well-written and the storyline fantastic. Anyone who reads it won’t be disappointed. The main character, Maximus, is having struggles with his belief system and his loyalty to Rome. It’s becoming more apparent that his values aren’t lining up with his duties and he is finding it harder and harder to keep doing what he’s doing. When he finally realizes what he truly believes, without all the noise around him, and without being a “people pleaser,” that’s when he finds contentment and a zeal for life.I highly recommend this book!

Maximus
This book was great. I couldn't put it down. The story line was awesome. It is intriguing. Maximus is a great character strong and dominating. When he meets Jesus he must be the Roman spectator .This is a book you won't want to put dow

Excellent book!
I very much enjoyed reading this book, as it intertwined historical events with fictional characters. The journey of Maximus and his loyal friend as they find truth and peace is remarkable and an emotional read. It is well written, thought provoking, and brings a different perspective from a Romans point of view, who may have been touched by the Savior's hand.

Worth a read
A heart-warming story which follows two men. Maximus, is a general and battle weary from fighting endless campaigns that have no meaning and of gods that offer no purpose. He is sent on a secret mission from the emperor to investigate the claims of a certain Nazarene who some believe is the long awaited Messiah. Along with his best friend, Androcoles, they are tasked with finding out if he poses a threat to Rome. What they find will change their lives...For a first time author, I thought he did a wonderful job. I connected with the characters and the story follows the biblical account from the point of fictional characters. I recommend it to those who enjoy Christian, historical fiction.

Did not meet expectations
Was disappointed in the story as it could have been a significant historical fiction work. Found it to be biased, did not portray people of the time accurately and was 'preachy'. The Christian values were overdone, causing more of a negative over reaction when I am sure that was not the intent. Mr. Black needs some research in Roman culture and I would recommend Rosemary Sutcliff's Roman/Britain trilogy.

Maximus a hero and a great man.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it gave a different perspective of the effect of our Savior on not only Jews but also Romans who were portrayed as men of culture who were searching for the truth.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
REALLY not what I expected. Being a fan of 'classic' history military, I was expecting a 'Vespasian' romp through Judea. However, I was very surprised to find it a re telling of the new testament with an unusual angle. I actually found myself sitting awake at night challenging my beliefs - in a positive way. Will defo pass this around the family
