Excited to implement the lessons
I'm a Title 1 reading intervention teacher who is lucky enough to have a school that provides me with intervention programs to use with my struggling readers. However, programs are not a cure-all and I have some students who read in a staccato, word-by-word manner in third grade and the fluency part of the program we are using with them will not help them break out of that habit. I'd also like to see the fluency scores improve for all of my students.I have read What Really Matters in Fluency by Richard Allington, and although I learned a lot (and recommend it), I felt that The Fluent Reader gave me more in the way of specific lessons to implement in a step-by-step manner for my classroom. I used small post-its to mark parts of the book that I need to refer back to, and after I was done reading it, I wrote headings on them and now they are tabs to easily find what I need until I get used to the lessons.I have a colleague who went to a lecture given my Tim Rasinski last year and was impressed by his lecture, his fluency knowledge, and his research to back that knowledge. It was her enthusiasm about the experience that inspired me to buy the book and now implement his ideas into my curriculum. I'm excited about helping my students achieve fluency success, since that is the only thing holding some of them back. I will be introducing the new lessons beginning this week with some of my groups--I will try to update once I have been using them for awhile to see how it is affecting my students' fluency scores.**Edit 3/22/14I have now used his poetry lesson suggestions for a number of weeks, and I have seen improvements with almost all of my students. One mother said this is the first time she has heard her son (3rd grade this year) read in a fluent way. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants specific suggestions to try to increase their students' fluency when reading and to understand why fluent reading is important. Thank you Mr. Rasinski!

Helpful!
I really found this book to be helpful as an educator. My copy came with a disc that was also super helpful. It gave lots of strategies to help students become more fluent. It also gave me better insight on what exactly is going on inside your students head. Great read and helpful for teachers.

very informative
I liked the helpful CD included. Oral book reading is very good for the beginning reader. This book is great for the parent teaching the child.

very helpful
I ordered this for a class I am in. It is an easy read that is very well organized, and provides lots of activities and strategies for teaching fluent reading. They range from simple to fairly complex (in terms of logistics), but he provides easy to follow, step by step instructions on how to use them and what their benefits are. It is a great reference guide for later use.I ordered it using amazon's student account which provides free 2 day shipping to students. It was sent out first thing the day after I placed the order and arrived within 2 days.

This is a really good book. It has many reading strategies and forms to use in the classroom with students. My only complaint was that the podcast and some videos on the CD would not load. I tried to play it on two different computers, but no luck. I highly recommend this book.
