Works!
Excellent product: I repaired a rocker panel skirt that was damaged by running over a piece of metal on the highway. The plastic panel was destroyed but all the pieces were hanging on, after warming up the bent plastic with a heat gun I was able to reinforce the back with mesh and blend in the front so I could sand and paint it. Even one of the clips was broken and I was able to repair it as well. Very useful product.

Pleasantly surprised with this product!
I needed to repair two waste bin lids that had the hinges torn or completely torn off from the lid itself. This was a cheap alternative to replacing the lids though I didn't expect much. However, the instructions supplied were satisfactory and at the end of the day I am using a large soldering iron to melt plastic. It really isn't that bad, if you take your time and do the proper prep work.Emory cloth is provided, I suggest you use it to clean around the areas to be repaired. For completely torn off items (hinges in my case) I used the pointed end of the welding shoe to stitch the part back together just as you would any other metal item that would be welded. The supplied mesh comes in handy. I can't attest to how much strength is added by using this, but it does ensure that the overall area will undergo liquification or welding. So, for large rips or tears I would say this component is a must. One thing to note - it does take a bit for the melted plastic to cool and resolidify, so take your time with large pieces and make sure it is fully cooled down before putting the item back into service. The supplied plastic welding rods do help but their use is more for filler and secondary on strength. In my instance I finalized this project with some 1" stainless steel strips, screwed along the length of the hinge for added durability and strength. Our waste management team will test my efforts, and I'll find out just how good of a job I did.

DO NOT BUY THE DELUXE. . . BUY THE BASIC !
After accidentally drilling a hole into the plastic radiator, I found myself in immediate need of a plastic welder. I scoured Amazon and found this one, and it was the only one that would be delivered overnight and I would have it in the morning. It was also twice as expensive as the basic model, but I did not want to wait two days, so I ordered this one. What comes in the box is exactly the same as the basic. What makes it "deluxe" are the additional plastic welding rods, screen material, two additional welding tips and some automotive metal tape.My very first attempt to plastic weld. . . I cut a 1/2" square of screen material. I Held it in place over the hole in the radiator while I applied the triangular brass tip to the screen. It took a while for the welding gun to heat up, but after it did it was plenty hot. I lightly allowed the screen to smash down into the softened plastic. I moved the brass tip around, embedding the entire screen, and then used pieces of a nylon zip tie to add plastic material over top the screen, easily sealing the hole in the radiator. No leaks!I found out Harbor Freight sells almost the identical "basic" kit for $19.99, so I went and got an additional kit from them. I can't wait to fix other plastic things!

Works as advertised (with a little practice)
The tool is basically the same as a low wattage soldering iron or woodburning tool. But that's a good thing. Because it's simple. It's a rugged, time-tested design. And if you've used any of those tools - using this is very much the same. The kit is well arrayed. There's a standard bent-metal heating iron rest. It works but leaves everything exposed (hot) and if you have kids or pets that like to get close while you work, you have to be careful around the unit when it's hot. I always just use an empty soda can on its side. Works like a shield and rest. The kit includes aluminum tape which you usually see on automotive plastics that come near heat. This is listed as "repair tape" to be used to hold seams together while you're making repairs. There are a couple strips of stainless steel screen. These are intended to be permanently melted into the plastic across any cracks as reinforcing mesh. Some strips of polypropylene and rods of polyethylene are included. You can buy strips or rods of other plastics like LDPE and HDPE online if you need to repair those types of plastics. The included tips screw into the head both for good heat transfer and strength. There are flat "ironing" tips for melting and smoothing plastic. And there "welding tips" with a 1/8 inch hole that allows you to feed plastic "rods" directly to the repair as you apply the heat to melt and weld the plastic. The keys to a good repair are (1) making sure you're using the right plastic for your repair strip/rod. Polypropylene will not make successful repairs on HDPE for instance. and (2) getting a good melt (so don't move the tip too quickly). There's a wirebrush and some sandpaper which you'll use if the plastic item you're repairing has junk or embedded dirt. These are standard things you can get anywhere as they wear out. All in all, I've made some successful repairs on a Polypropylene cup holder in my UTV and a couple HDPE repairs on a plastic wheelbarrow body. Pleased with the purchase. I think you will be too, with a little practice.
