The Foundry Modo Notes: Essential Modo 3D Graphics Techniques for Advanced Beginners Paperback – June 3, 2014

I have been using Modo for awhile and the help and online resources are next to useless for me. Between smug fanboys talking way too fast, or engineers with thick accents covering everything but anything useful, my one gripe with Modo is documentation. While this book could cover a lot more ground, it's fills for the most part what the author sees as a gap and I have to agree. Online tutorials are not the easiest way for me to learn--I want to be able to choose info when I need it. Modo's inline help is confusing and overly technical and assumes knowledge that I, for one, don't have. The author approaches the subject in a straightforward manner, offering tips that seemed to have slipped through the cracks with other Modo resources. I just wish there were more of them hence the 4 stars instead of 5.As with most 3D software, Modo is complex and other providers usually have books in the pipeline prior to or concurrent with release. The Real World Modo book claims a publication date of 2014 but that's just the Kindle version--the title page has a copyright date of 2010. I like Modo. It's got more features than Sketchup, less complexity and overhead than Maya, and real hard surface modeling that Zbrush makes you jump through hoops to get. I just wish The Foundry would realize there's a big gap in their tutorials between absolute beginners and Modo pros and that some people can't learn from online tutorials or scattershot narration.

I cant give this top marks. Its a skinny workbook styled book that hardly has any pages. I didnt expect it to be so skinny at all (my bad for not looking at the page count) It seems like a PDF document that was turned into a book.... and not even one thats very detailed. Most of what is included, I have already figured out on my own (I make 3D assets for a living, so I already have modelling knowledge... I just moved to modo recently, as it was more powerful than what Id been using, so I just need to learn the interface) At any rate, I had to order an additional book.... coz this just doesnt cut it on its own.BUT... there are a couple good tidbits in it, that said. And as another reviewer said, he kind of outlines pitfalls in certain places from the POV of a user, which most books wouldnt include. So kudos for that. Just would have liked more stuff than what is present.

Not a lengthy manual. However, it describes many of the pit falls, newbie Modo users need to know about.An easy dozen frustrating hours can be eliminated by following the cautions described in this book. DON'T LEARN MODO WITHOUT IT !!!!

The graphic design could be a bit cleaner, but as someone coming to Modo from almost 20 years of using 3D Studio Max I really like how the book focuses on accomplishing specific common tasks (i.e. selection or rotation methods) instead of walking me through the making of some model like a rank beginner.

Embarrassingly amateur for a published product. He's got the right idea; but execution, poor detail, lack of relevance and incomplete content make this feel unedited and unfinished. Would have been appropriate for a PDF that is funded by donations. The publisher and editor clearly did not know the subject. Can you return a paperback?

Such a sad effort. Save your money. The title of the introduction page is: "I am not a modo® expert," and the author goes on to prove it.

Clear and straight

modo has become a software for a tiny niche and its potential reduced greatly by the Foundry. This book just emphasis this ten fold. It had great potential...but it has become a software for product design and character development in games...anything resembling architecture or interiors or any other useful application...do not bother...there are better. And it has become VERY expensive....on its own...and many useful add ons cost as much as the software. This has become an enterprise software only...not for the avid individual user. Go elsewhere my friend.

I've used Modo since Vs 301 up to Vs 902, but have not used the app for over a couple of years and though I'd re-acquaint myself with Modo... The author of this 'book' seems to have a problem with Modo in as much as he appears to be listing all the 'problems' he has personally understanding the software which frankly results in an unintelligible text. I found the book totally useless. The writer states in his intro that he's not an expert... I could have written a better book myself. The next stop for this publication will be the trash can.

Mir hat es geholfen mich in Modo zu orientieren! Gewohnt "einfache" aus anderen Programmen laufen in Modo anders. Diese einfachen Handgriffe werden weder von video2brain noch von anderen Videos oder Büchern erklärt. Endlich komme ich mit diesem tollen Programm zurecht.
