Gluten-Free on a Shoestring: 125 Easy Recipes for Eating Well on the Cheap

Awesome Book!
This is a great book! I liked it so much I bought the kindel edition for a friend who is also Gluten Sensitive. Some of the recipes need the premade flour blend by Better Batter. Others do not call for the blend, so it is very versital. I also highly recommend Carol Fenster's books if you are new to the Gluten Free Lifestyle for whatever reason. She does a good job of explaining issues with Gluten intolerance as well as providing amazing recipes which she has developed over several decades of experience! Both of these ladies are on top of their game. In this book however there are lots of helpful hints on how to save money while shopping. I had zero help when I first found out I had to go gluten free or basically just spend the rest of my life in bed sick. It took me a long time to put the pieces together alone, and it was over whelming at the time as well as taxing on my purse! And I'm not rich by any means. I like most people felt I had nothing I could eat. I wish I would of had this book and Carol Fensters book 1000 Gluten Free Recipes 2 years ago. With the recipes in these two books and the information Carol provides life is alot easier. Carol has a ton of books, so look them over and see which one is best for you. But I recomend that you make this one part of your kitchen collection. Recipes are simple and delicous!

own this one - whether you're new to GF eating or not!
I wish Nicole had written this book when I first started my gluten free (GF) saga. She tells you all you need to know to set up a GF kitchen and eat GF without a lot of fuss and without cashing in your IRA. I have many GF cookbooks, and use them all, but quite sparingly compared to this gem. I've not made any dish in this cookbook that I didn't like. She has also encouraged me - a pretty damned good baker - to branch out. She even has a recipe for GF sourdough starter! Some is in my refrigerator right now! Nicole has a spectacular blog [...] which is humorous and on which she posts recipes. (She's writing a new cookbook even now!) I recommend that all newbies start your GF experience here, but old hats at the GF game should not pass on this book. The only other thing besides this book you'll need is Jule's Nearly Normal All Purpose flour and you'll have everything you need. (It can be found online; in my experience, it works like no other, and it can be cheaper than alternatives. I buy by the case.) If you live or work near a Trader Joe's market, you're golden, as they have many GJ offerings and are expanding all the time!Update from 05/27/12: Every recipe I've done from this book tastes great. One thing I've learned baking from this book is that the key to GF baking success is mixing doughs longer. I mix all my other recipes longer now (e.g., from Nearly Normal Cooking For Gluten-Free Eating: A Fresh Approach to Cooking and Living Without Wheat or Gluten) and they come out better. I've had a little problem with the baking times here (I have to bake longer, or things fall) but I blame my schitzo oven, not Nicole. Even when I didn't bake the item long enough, the taste was great! Her book is my go-to cookbook now, and I'm a cookbook user. (After this, JOY OF COOKING is second; Fenster's 1000 Gluten-Free Recipes 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes (1,000 Recipes) and Nearly Normal Cooking For Gluten-Free Eating: A Fresh Approach to Cooking and Living Without Wheat or Glutenare tied for third.) FYI, Nicole also recommends BetterBatter Flour, available online, and I've used that too with great success. I've also mixed my own, which is easy enough if you can find ingredients cheaply in bulk (a recipe is in The First Year: Celiac Disease and Living Gluten-Free: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed. Happy baking/cooking everyone!Update from 02/14/15: Yep, still lovin' this book! In fact, my favorite GF cookbooks have a new order. I probably use Nicole's newer Gluten-Free on a Shoestring Bakes Bread: (Biscuits, Bagels, Buns, and More) more than any of those GF others. This is still the book I'd recommend to GF newbies, no doubt.

GOOD RECIPES, LOTS OF VARIETY...MAYBE NOT FOR BASIC BEGINNERS
I am have been favorably impressed by the several recipes I've tried already from the book. Only thing is, the book relies on 'bought' flour mixes..this alone can really add to the costs of baking gluten-free. And going by the authors of different GF cookbooks (their various flour formulas) just didn't work for me. My advice,if you're new at GF living...experiment with blends of flours, there are many which can be substituted one for another, but there are some that can not. I've also learned that different mixtures of flours work best for different recipes, as regular sandwich bread, pie crust, cookies, and cakes. I use four different (with variations) for each of these four types of product. Once you learn this, the rest is just fun! Book is fine, lots of selections and easy to follow directions..I like that..I simply use my 'private' flour blends...so far, perfect!

Best Gluten Free Cookbook
The Popover on the cover got me to look at this cook book. The recipe was easy and so are the other wonderful recipes inside. The fact that you can use a gluten free all purpose flour and a few other ingredients to mimic the baked goods you used to make with wheat flour, is what drew me to this book. I highly recommend it anyone just starting out with gluten free cooking. The author also has a blog with tips to help you make the transition.

Best gluten free recipe book on my shelf
I love this book! Almost all the recipes so far have been a great success (the exception being flour tortillas whichwere too a bit too fiddly). I think my favorite recipe so far is the apple pie which is amazing. Gluten free on a shoestring contains both savoury and sweet recipes, a selection of breads and a useful section of tips for making life in the kitchen easier. It is an american cookbook, so uses volume measurements. Thankfully measuring cups are widely available and the difference between us and uk cups is small enough that it doesn't make much difference. I've never seen any of the recommended brands for sale but I've had great success with Doves farm mixes.

I bought this book after buying G. F. ...
I bought this book after buying G.F. on a Shoestring Bakes Bread, so G.F. on a Shoestring has the bread recipes from this book, but still has lots of other recipes.

Gluten-Free on a Shoestring
I first checked out this book from our public library thinking it would probably be like any other gluten free cookbook. Wow, was I wrong. I have tried five recipes from this book and have loved every one of them. They are easy to make and you don't have to go overboard with shopping for items you wouldn't normally have in your pantry. Love, love this book.

Brilliant book!
This is a very valuable book for anyone who is eating gluten free as it contains recipes for loads of food items which usually have wheat in them, including a gluten free hoisin sauce recipe, which I use in lots of my cooking. My favorites would be the chocolate chip brownies, lemon cupckaes, devils food cake, sweet and sour chicken, cinammon raisin bagels, pasta dough... the list is endless !!! Highly recommended.
