61 year old geezer buys new Red Ryder BB gun!!
You know my age. I started shooting smokeless powder burning firearms when I was maybe 14 years old, ans it's been a life long activity for me. I've hand loaded a lot of ammunition. I competed in NRA Hunter Pistol, and IHMSA 200 meter handgun matches. I've fired maybe 10,000 to 20,000 rounds. Why the heck would I order a $25.00 Red Ryder BB gun from Amazon? Here it is. This gun is inexpensive, quiet, and has good accuracy for a BB gun. I have much more expensive pellet rifles also, that will sink 5 pellets into one tiny hole that measures .0" center to center. The Red Ryder will never even come close to doing that. But, for a BB gun, this thing is pretty darn accurate. I checked the zero of the gun first, and, using the nice Daisy BB's, found it was right on in windage, and just slightly high in elevation. That's at about 17 feet. This was easily zero'd by lowering the rear sight one "tooth". This was shooting off a rest, and with my terrible eyesight. Right about 15-17 feet is the accepted distance of BB long gun competition. My groups ranged from about 7/16" to about 1", with a few fliers. That's pretty good for a BB gun. Not as good as Daisy's own Avanti Champion 499 competition gun, but good enough. This this is pretty quiet too. You won't likely disturb the neighbors. And, using a target setup with a cardboard box ( I use a Costco sized cereal box) and folded cardboard inside the box and a clothes pin to hang your targets, once the sights are adjusted, you can easily set up the target box at 15-17 feet indoors in your house or basement, and shoot any time you want. My setup easily catches and traps the BBs inside the box. And, don't tell anyone, but I collect these fired BBs and reuse them, and they shoot the same sized groups as the new ones. Lube the gun now and then in the oil hole that is marked. If I can get my eyesight corrected properly ( I have astigmatism) my groups should get even better. One negative is the trigger. It is quite a hard pull. And, since one will be firing this gun a lot (talk about cheap target shooting!!), I think this trigger may eventually draw blood!! I think maybe some kind of soft band around the trigger finger may be in order here. I wanted a BB shooter that I could do inexpensive target shooting, and do it onside when I want to. I would like to mount a scope on this gun, because of my exasperating eyesight. I wanted to bring up here, that someone DOES make a scope mount to fit this BB gun (and also the Crosman Cowboy lever action BB gun). If you go to the Daisy Museum on the internet, and then to the gift shop, you will find the Brice scope mount for this gun. $14.95 plus freight. I haven't ordered one yet, because their online shipping calculator comes up with like $45.00 to ship to Hawaii. Something has to be wrong with that!! I paid $25.00 (on an Amazon special) for the Red Ryder. This mount requires no modification of the gun, and is said to mount with a screwdriver and a wrench. Another person, Chief AJ, makes an adult sized butt stock, should one want a longer one, and an enlarged cocking lever too. The stock klever is cramped, and I found myself shooting it with my fingers under the lever, rather than inside the lever, as it was more comfortable to me. I also am getting some failures to feed BBs. It probably happened 4-5 times out of 50 shots. Maybe it will get better with use? We'll see. I will do an update after I've fired this thing quite a few more rounds. And, if I get the Brice scope mount, I'll talk about that also. I would have liked to have bought the 75th anniversury model, but, through Amazon, thay would not ship that to me for some reason. I gave it 4 stars due to the hard trigger and feeding problems. For value (at $25), I should have bought two.

Childhood Nostalgia
Pure nostalgia of a simpler time in life. I had one of these as a child, we went to Kmart and my Grandfather saw it and got it for me. So holding this one was just pure bliss. It has the same build quality as they did back then. Easy to use, very functional for getting rid of unwanted pest on your lawn. The power is perfect to scare off anything if you're not aiming at them intentionally to hurt them. It's worth every penny, dime, dollar. If you remember that sound it makes as you shoot it then feel right at home.
