Great Art Book on the Basics +
Jerry Yarnell is a great landscape, and other , artist. I prefer his style over Bob Ross, as to more natural appearing (both are beneficial resources). He has a series of art books out, with somewhat repetitious introductory material so each book can stand on its own - but it covers basic land / water / plant forms. "Landscape Painting Secrets" devotes the 2nd half to complete landscape paintings, which build on his introductory examples, and both sections should be considered while working on the full landscapes. His style is more realistic, and more detailed, than Ross', so a little harder to master. But his books break down the basics. Though focused on acrylics, the techniques are very similar for oils (I've used his techniques for both with great results). I recommend this, and all his books on art techniques, of which I have a few.

What a great book!

Great Instruction Manual
Colorful, very informative and as importantly, I felt the number of pages and information on each was worth the money. The only downside is that in liking the first book, I ordered the second and found some of the same "how to's" which was a disappointment.

A pleasure to learn from
I've always been interested in painting and started a class recently. My instructor spoke so highly of Jerry Yarnell and she was so good that I chose this book. But the funny thing is that my husband, (who is an engineer) and has never been exposed or showed any interest in art, became interested in this book and was using his instruction for with a "paint app" on ipad! He was able to understand and create a beautiful vignette based on the step by step, easy to understand instruction! I was pretty impressed. I'm still "old school painting" and can't wait to start his lessons with my paint and canvas. He not only allows easy understanding, but teaches concepts all along the way. When you have instant gratification, you know it's a great book and great artist with great knowledge and experience!

The best
I have bought several books by Jerry Yarnell. His book on landscape secrets is the best of the lot. Detail instructions on the various aspects of nature--weeds, grass, bushes, trees, ect , are layed out clearly with illusrations. The information on stone walls and sand was excellent and most helpful for me. I also enjoyed his explanation on painting wood ,such as would be used as a post in a fence. All of his books have projects ( pictures ) with how to steps to follow . This is a nice feature but I want to paint pictures of my chooseing I needed some guidance with specific areas. All of Mr. Yarnell;s books are helpful but by far his Landscape Painting Secrets is the best :) I find myself reaching for it time after time .

THE BEST
This book is absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to better their landscaping techniques. I can't even begin to tell you how many books I have on this subject, always looking for further instruction or special techniques etc, but this book has it all! This is now my go to book for any problems I run into. I just began plein air painting and I can already see how this book will help me to better my paintings and skills for beautiful landscapes. You won't be sorry buying this book. I am an acrylic painter and also a watercolorist for 20+ years

Typical Yarnell, Outstanding Instruction!
I have in my library most all of Jerry's books and this one fits in just perfectly. Instead of a complete painting he gives valuable tips on the ingredients that make up the painting, the rocks, grass, trees, etc. and then puts them all together for one of his signature full paintings. The book is easy to read and understand and it will make you break out some paints and go to it. The book was shipped and arrived way ahead of schedule. I would gladly recommend this book to beginners and even those, like me, who are beyond beginner.

Good for the beginner or hobby artist.
I wish I had read the reviews before I purchased it, but I still don’t regret it. I have to agree with Nathan’s review. Since I already have 2 other books by Yarnell, snd this one uses the same techniques, I probably won’t buy another (just cut and paste).
