Best Cuban Tres Book
This is a welcome addition to the very small number of books on the Cuban tres. Like the others, it can be used as a tutor book but is also more than that. For the first time we have a complete overview of the history of the tres on the island of Cuba and the styles played on this instrument, while sticking to the basics and not being over-long or complicated. There are complete pieces to play and a number of execises too, all in both normal music notation and tablature. There is online audio and video support and links are given to access these. It is a masterful product of the colaboration of Jon Griffin with the accomplished Cuban tresoro Leonel González. If you are used to playing your tres with the tuning G C E, then you you will need to have a capo at fret 2 or re-tune using lighter gauge strings to match the examples in this book which are all for the tres tuned A D F#. Leonel plays with his 1st string pairing in unison, but you can still use the octave tuning if you prefer. This book fills a gap in the repertoire. Get it.
