GREAT UK PUNK/POST PUNK FROM 1977 THROUGH 1981
i have to give this deluxe style release 5 stars as there are some obscure uk punk bands on this disc from back in the day when punk mattered, here we got THE USERS , JOHNNY MOPED, THE CIGGARETTS, THE MEKONS as well as 15 others from the post punk london era, also THE SWELL MAPS are here wich is a nice edition, in other forms over the past 35 years i have most of these songs but i like the way this package was put together, this comes with a nice booklet in a nice small style case, this focuses more on the different sounds these bands where exploring with starting as far back as 1977, in fact i was sad 6 or 7 years back when the swell maps where to play nyc the guitar player died within hours of the show ( or was it before ??? i should have googled that) anyway this is not just another run of the mill uk punk comp with the pistols, the damned, sham 69 and the buzzcocks THIS GOES DEEPER and the remastering is great, this soul jazz label is very good like the acid jazz label is, i am very pleased there is a uk underground edition in this series that focuses on the uk obscure stuff like this label has done with some us stuff in its now 5 volumes. if you still buy cds like i do and are not downloading BUY THIS if punk and post punk was your thing..,also this is not a cheap comp, it was well well done...

Im a lover of Punk,New Wave,Ska revival,New Romantics, Mod revival and Indie from the beginning which was of course late 76 when bands like The 101er's released their debut and i love hearing songs that never made the the top 40 or even the top 100.Punk 45 vol 2 has some great tunes from bands such as O-Level (Who was Ed Ball who also formed TV Personalities,Teenage Filmstars and The Times), The Shapes with their 92 seconds of "Wots For Lunch Mum?" is a corker and The Killjoys featuring Kevin Rowland before his Dexy Midnight Runners days is pretty cool too.I didnt know too much about any of these band except whats in the booklet....Id heard of The Killjoys, Johnny Moped TV Personalities and Swell Maps (and also The Cigarettes who happen to be on Mod compilations).I love playing this set of compilations even if im not that into the american punk side but they did do a few corkers which i consider punk and not just rock but you cant beat British Punk.....Great stuff for some unknown pleasures and a few known treasures. These songs came out when the charts were full of ****:and Dog Meat and this really did kill the hippies

So its a nice change to find one with more obscure bands like ...
Most compilation's of this musical era tend to focus on "new wave" bands that made the fringes of the charts. So its a nice change to find one with more obscure bands like this one. Sure there are some better known bands here, Mekons, Television Personalities,Josef K, Swell Maps etc. But there are some half forgotten gems too, The Jermz and the Shapes for instance. And anything with the Prefects is fine by me. Very nice booklet too.
