If you follow this book to completion you will be able to handle many Bossa Nova songs and comping chords in fake books. I have to say I made awesome progress with the book but I love the Bossa Nova style so it kept me interested. Recommend playing the advanced chords on a nylon string guitar as it works great for studying quartal harmony.

This is a good book. I am about half way through it. It is well thought out. I do wish it had more songs.

Carlos is a virtuoso bossa nova guitarist that is equally skilled at teaching. He expresses rhythms and patterns in a very easy to follow and intuitive way. More than that, the book is well rounded, providing historical and cultural context to the bossa nova sound. There is a reason this book is referenced on many websites that teach Brazilian guitar - Now that I bought it and have been studying with it, it is because it is very thorough and has enough material to keep me practicing and inspired for years.

This book is a well thought out, step-by-step guide to learn playing bossa nova guitar, but it is definitely not for beginners. Bossa nova has two distinct characteristics: complicated chords and complicated rhythms. The tabs provide the chords alright, but the syncopated rhythms require the ability to read music notation or have experience with counting sixteenth notes and pauses by ear. The CD is great for practicing and takes you all the way to playing a whole song, including a background track for adding your guitar part.

Perfect book for me who is familiar with the basic music guitar theory but new to the rhythm and the extended jazz chords and substitutions for this type of music. How the chords are grouped is especially helpful in figuring out the role of each chord.

Being a Bass player I wanted a easy to follow book and CD to learn that great sexy Brazilian guitar style. This book unlocks the essence of that style. The CD is great and inspiring. This is fun and I'm learning all those great cords that make this music style unique. Highly recommend it.

I don't think anyone dissected the Bossa Nova guitar style so thoroughly as Carlos Arana did. This book the companion CD is the next best thing to having João Gilberto giving you guitar lessons.

Arrived on time and in perfect condition. This is an excellent book, rhythm is key in bossa nova and this books takes time explain the different variations as well as the history that led this its creation. Very good.
