Would this work for an 8 year old? Or would it be way too big?

It would definitely be too big. My head is on the larger size of average and it fits me well. So unless the eight year old in question has a large head or a lot of hair too put under a wig cap I wouldn't recommend.

Is the wig black or brown?

It’s dark brown. I bought one from a different seller that was way brown. This one is a perfect dark brown for my Bellatrix costume.
