Teachers and Administrators Abroad: Stay Away
This curriculum is hard to describe, because though it is too simple in concepts for children (explicit teaching of colors and numbers for first graders), it is at the same time too difficult in expectations of language understanding. [A classroom treasure hunt??? Good luck explaining that to an emergent English speaker!!] For the teacher, the resources which are promised online to help deliver the standards are very much lacking. There are no colorful pre-made flashcard sets to accompany the curriculum, which have become standard as part of any robust and teacher friendly ESL curriculum. The songs are dull, and the lesson plans that accompany seem to expect children to sit and be quiet, reading the textbook along with the teacher. Perhaps this would have worked in an age when the writers grew up, or the publishers, but in the wider world outside of the UK and in modern times, parents and teachers do not expect children to sit still for great lengths of time. Lastly, the overall scope and units of the ESL curriculum rehashes topics many of the same thing most ESL children have already studied in kindergarten (school items, farm, family, body and senses, transportation). More difficult grammar concepts do not have explicit lessons within the curriculum, and therefore it is the teacher's duty to come up with those. I am disappointed and not impressed to say the least.I personally have seen better curriculums from National Geographic, Big English, South Korean made Kids Brown, California-aligned Mother Goose Time, and even Fingerprints, which though was also simple in concepts, did offer plenty of play-based activities.
