10 Years Later: An In-Depth Review
My best friend and I have owned about 8 of these Cold Steel throwers now for many years and I highly value them. In a sort of way they are like members of my family. Somehow, some way. We’ve been through a lot and my friend even began naming them a long time ago. 'Slam', 'Thud', etc. 'Thunk'. Haha why not. Where some folks have a firing range, we have a throwing range, with securely mounted thick-cut rounds of logs in varying diameters and places. Usually, they range from 12″ – 36″ in diameter. Backboards in place for those days when you're not in the zone. These True Flight throwers are a lot of fun, and they're perfect for developing your throwing skills. Ultimately for me, the goal was to be able to quickly acquire and hit a moving target while moving around on my feet (say running or jogging, turning quickly etc), from any distance up to about 30 feet. When we threw together, if you miss, your turn is over. My record was 71 sticks at 20, 25, & 30 paces. I throw by the blade, not the handle as many pros do. It was just what we did, it was just life. “YO wanna come over and throw? Been marinatin flank steak since yesterday! Yes I do mofo I’ll be there in 10! Family/friend bbq’s – throwing. Out back for a few minutes – throwing. Summer, fall, spring, winter, throwing. We have gone through so many log rounds with these over the years that I used to have to go out and find people who work with logs, sculptors and such, to buy or scavenge rounds from and load down my truck with. These throwers have bounced through car windows, stuck into cars, tires, doors, through house windows, car windows, up onto roofs, hard-throw bounce 30 feet out to the sidewalk, (CLAAAAANGGGG!) into bbq’s, gutters, neighbor’s yards etc. Under, inside of, on top of and through everything in and out of sight. I have accidentally bounced off one tree and amazingly stuck into another more than once. With so many tens of thousands of throws, it’s pretty cool to have witnessed so many incredible and highly improbable and/or just plain dumb-luck things we have seen. Whoa!!! Did you see that!!!! That’s amazing!!!! Hahaha.Eventually, due to a combination of factors (for us anyway), throwing around concrete, years of throwing really hard from long distances, and seriously high skill level acquired over time, the tips will get ruined - but again, I am talking about extreme use for years. When you do finally get good enough to hit a rabbit on the run from 20 feet, the tips will eventually break off from .25″ up to about .50″ - some years later. With heavy use of multiple throwers from 2+ people, maybe inside of one summer. It’s because of the sheer number of times that each blade will nick the tips of the others in the target with great force at high velocity, repeatedly. This is undeniable evidence that you have gotten really freaking good at it. Nick out a 16th of an inch, then another 16th in the same spot, multiple nicks on each side, you get the idea. The steel becomes not so full-tangy anymore after a while, haha. A couple of our Cold Steel throwers wound up being a full inch shorter than they were when they were new due to having to grind a new point and resharpen. Not a big deal. By that time it's like losing a loved one and you're happy to restore a new stickable tip onto your old friend.Even so, before repairing them, I’ve thrown the broken-tipped ones thousands of times too, and the weight is great, so it usually just sticks regardless. It helps to increase the force and not use hard woods. Never use hard wood! If you can’t leave a good imprint with your fingernail, just don’t use it. There’s nothing more dissatisfying than a perfect throw that bounces out. Besides, perhaps, the soul-crushing claaannnnngggg of a thrower without any grip belly-flopping off the wood, echoing throughout the neighborhood as it whizzes past your ear.We were so skilled with these throwers that the paracord never stood a chance because of our grouping. When you stick a knife in the center of the target and 5 more within an 8th of an inch, their sharp blades slice through the paracord like butter. Typically it takes several throws to cut away the cord, though at times I have sliced the entire cord off at just the right angle, sticking the first vertically and the second horizontally, like a ‘T’, or an ‘L’. After a while, I learned how awesome electrical tape is for making a new quick handle, and it became necessary to begin wrapping them with the electrical tape straight out of the box, right over the paracord, to protect them. Otherwise, the paracord will be shredded to pieces within 2 to 3 hours. If you’re throwing with one knife, no problem. Except that’s a lot of walking back and forth. I throw with 4 usually. Sometimes 3, sometimes 7.I know this is a long review, and I’m sorry, I like to write detailed things. And my best friend is dead and gone now, for 2 years, so it felt good to remember him here. We had some pretty amazing and fun times throwing together while the dogs or pork shoulders candied in sweet baby rays o.g. over glowing briquettes. Miss you mane! Thanks for always being there for me and introducing me to Cold Steel and throwing. I haven’t thrown since you died, but I will again. Soon. I’m here looking at tactical things aren’t I?! It’s a start. Just got a new tactical Wakizashi combat ready from KOA. I wish you could see it.Uhm, anyway - I highly recommend these Cold Steel True Flight throwers. 5 stars since their inception and forever. They sink deep, have perfect balance, and if you’re decent at throwing, they’re quite capable of protecting you, or hunting, or whatever you could need to throw a knife for. I'm here today to add several more to my cart, to simply keep in new condition, with my survival gear.

Another winner from Cold Steal
I bought this knife on sale and for the price it’s hard to beat. I tend to stick with cold steel because I trust the brand. The knife is balanced well with no frills knife. It’s great to use for splitting up firewood and throwing. I am far from a decent knife thrower but I seem to stick this knife almost every time. Because it’s a hefty knife it has the most satisfying sound when you stick the target. It doesn’t come super sharp out of the box but enough to work with… I believe it’s because of the type of steal used to achieve the desired outcome of a great throwing knife and a good camp knife. The color does make it hard to find when you miss or it bounces off target especially when it’s starts to get dark but I’d rather have it black and not shine personally so I’ll deal with it.The sleeve it comes with is decent. For the price it’s great. It holds it in place and allows for quick draws if that’s your style. It will def fall out if you are jumping around or rolling around but for normal everyday carry seems to work just fine. Bought this knife in December and a couple hundred throws later it’s still working fine hardly any paint wear and sleeve hasn’t changed. I did add a lil oil inside of the sleeve to keep the knife from corrosion and works fine. All good five stars. Another winner from CS.

Just a fantastic throwing knife
I have 4 of these that I use to throw with. I own many kinds and types of throwing knives. These are always my go to. If you throw a lot the Paracord will not last long. I like to wrap my handles with white gorilla tape. Size, weight, and durability is fantastic. From around 20 ft out my groupings are at the most 6 inches. I find these extremely accurate to throw with. For price point I don't think there's a better throwing knife on the market.

Excellent quality and feel
The media could not be loaded. Definitely love this knife. It is solid and takes a beating because it took me a little bit to get the feel for it. I’ve been throwing this thing no spin and it hits almost every time and I’m not an expert. It feels great, balanced, and the sheath is good quality. I would definitely recommend this for the price. It’s a great carrier and the blade is fairly sharp as well which is why I don’t do half spin with it. 😆

A tale of two knives
I have a pair of CS True Flight Throwers I bought 30 years ago, back before the newfangled 'interweb' when you had to order through the mail from a Cold Steel printed catalog.Yes, I'm old, I know it and I own it.I've beat the snot out of these knives over the years and they've held up great, so I was pleased to learn Cold Steel still sells them. I figured I'd buy a new one to throw in a bushcraft bag, but the modern-day True Flight thrower is not like the knife of days gone by.The new one is significantly larger, for no reason I can fathom. It feels bulkier and less balanced than the old one. And, while the product listing states the steel is 1055, the actual steel listed on the knife is S50C. Similar steel, but from what I can discern from reading on that newfangled 'interweb', it's somewhat cheaper than 1055, which may explain the switcheroo. The manufacturing process has apparently changed too. I don't know how the old ones were made, but the new ones are clearly cast in a mold. There are casting burrs along the spine of the new knife that make it very apparent. For the price, this is probably a decent knife. But, because I have the old ones to compare to, I know what's changed and I'll stick with the OG versions.I'll be sending this one back.
