Action, Suspense, Romance, Heat and so much more!
I've been reading Kaylea's Valkyrie Series and when I saw this one, I just couldn't resist it. While I know about Pararescue aka 'PJ' this is the first book I've seen with them as a focus.Devon had been dating a Ty a PJ when he'd been deployed. Her intent was to wait for him to return to break up with him as there just wasn't a real spark between them. In horrible weather conditions, she is called out for a pick up, unfortunately visibility isn't enough to complete the run. Now Devon is filled with guilt because that's where Ty dies.Cam is Ty's best friend and fellow PJ, after all is said and done, he declares his feelings for Devon, she isn't ready to hear it although her heart and body surely react to him. With them both back in Bagram, Cam is determined to run into her and does in the rec center.Plenty of sparring between these two, and concern for each other grows as things get more intense in the field. With the turning point being when Dev's helicopter goes down.Lots of suspense and action as these two find their way to a relationship in spite of the war raging around them.I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Action, suspense, and romance
Devon Crawford is an Army pilot who flies medical evacs in Afghanistan. She is determined to protect her heart but Cam Munro is determined to win her over. While fighting for their lives these two finally face their feelings.I know when I pick up a book by Cross that it will be suspenseful and great. This one did not disappoint! This book was action packed from the start and filled with an emotional romance.Devon was a determined and skilled pilot. She is struggling with her attraction to Cam because not only could they get in trouble for it but also because he was her ex Tyler’s best friend. She is struggling to deal with her guilt at Ty’s death and her attraction to Cam. I really liked her because she felt like a real and genuine person.Cam was the protective alpha male who wanted to protect Devon. I liked that while he was protective he still was proud of her abilities and allowed her to do her job. He doesn’t try to change her or force her to stop doing what she loves. He just loves and protects her when she needs it. Cam was just everything I look for in an alpha hero, especially in a military romance.Overall, I really enjoyed this book and want to continue the series. The side characters were just as interesting as the main couple and now I need to know their stories. If you are looking for a suspenseful military romance check out this book.

This feels like real life during wartime (from my civilian POV).
The crash and the subsequent defensive fighting felt very real. Devon was a Blackhawk Medevac pilot who gets shot down in enemy territory while on a rescue mission. Cam, an enlisted Pararescuejumper (PJ) medic, has fallen for his dead BF's girl, and rushes to rescue her, her crew, and her passengers. There's high drama in the fight to be rescued themselves. It kept me engaged but I couldn't understand how she ended up in the military knowing there was the strongest chance that she could get shot down with her great fear from her father's death? It didn't ring true. I also expected her to get some kind of accommodation for managing to set her Blackhawk down in those extreme conditions. And what happened to Will her co-pilot? Did he survive? Not one mention of either of those things. Their love felt real but I don't like stories that leave me with questions. Well written but frustrated.

Heart-pounding action, great suspense and imagery, and a sweet romance.
Tags: Romantic Suspense, Military, Friends to Lovers, Standalone, No CliffhangerFirst of all, I love military romantic suspenses where the heroine is not a civilian, but holds a position that makes her more than just arm candy or a uniform groupie, if you know what I mean. Devon “Spike” Crawford delivered on that front as an officer and pilot flying Hawks in medevac missions. Career-wise she was solid, but her personal life was complicated. She had dated Ty, a PJ, under the radar for a short time before he was deployed to Bagram. They were casual about it, and instead of a clean break, she’d just let things fizzle out after he left. That, compounded with the fact that she’d fallen in lust with Ty’s best friend Cam from the moment Ty introduced them, left her feeling guilty about the whole situation. Even though Cam felt the same way, they never acted on it. And after Ty’s death, it seemed even more inappropriate to Dev. I didn’t care for her much in terms of the romance—she wanted Cam but worried about her career. The risk vs.reward was a constant factor in regards to her hot and cold behavior that I often wished she would make up her mind. The revelation that she learned to fly because she was afraid of crashing (a plane crash is how she had lost her father) was pure foreshadowing.I LOVED Cam! If he hadn’t brought up the fact of their mutual attraction, he would most likely have remained in the friend zone forever. He didn’t push her to give in but reassured her that he would be there when she was ready, and he was mindful of her concerns about fraternization and how they behaved in public. The suspense portion of the story was so good! It was a lot like Black Hawk Down, but in the mountains of Afghanistan. My heart was thumping the entire time Dev, Cam and co. were on the run. I didn't dislike the villain's POV per se, but I did end up skimming a lot of his ramblings. And with that said, don’t expect a lot of sex with the romance (there was only one steamy, and one sex scene at the very end). The story didn't need sex to make their feelings believable. The romance was fueled by the type of people they were, the high-stress of their jobs, honor and loyalty.I enjoyed the side characters, and it seems they all had a little set up for future stories. I look forward to reading more about these men and women.

it gives an incite into the life of all military men and women and not only the love, commoradrae
a very powerful story, lots of detail and well researched. gritty, intense, it gives an incite into the life of all military men and women and not only the love, commoradrae, training and fear that they live with serving in these countries but also the strain and worry for those they know when out on missions not knowing if they will come back alive or injured. kaylea also gives some idea of what the enemy is thinking and why they are so fanatical. it keeps you on the edge of your seat, you just want the characters to be ok and get back in one piece. it helps you get an idea of just how bad it gets on missions, the bond that forms between the different forces and ranks when fighting together and trying to keep safe. protecting the wounded above all else to get them home. this is a brilliant series, cam and dev the main couple in this story dealing with the loss of a friend and the battle against their feelings for each other while keeping themselves each other and others with them safe

Lots of action
This has as much suspense as romance, possibly more. The romance simmers along under its own steam, while the action ramps up as the book progresses. The thing I found most interesting is that the writer includes the perspective of Afghan people, mainly the fighters, and doesn't write them off as simply brainwashed loons, but often people responding to the bitter legacy of conflict in their land, it gives a poignancy to the whole insane "War on Terror" that politicians were only too happy to wage at the cost of lives, on both sides, they don't seem to understand or care about. The military stuff feels well researched. I have no idea how accurate it is, as I know nothing about American military life, but it gives the story that little bit extra, too.

Amazing start to an amazing series! How can you not love these stories and characters ?
I love this lady's style of writing, her knowledge of the military and their terms and her amazing characters! Strong fermale leads and hunky, sensitive males, what more can you ask?You will believe that Kaylea has been in these military situations as the pictures she paints are so true and detailed. This first book was a terrific story and I loved the preriphery characters as well as the main ones. I have now read all of the books so far in this series and the stories just keep getting better and better, my favourite is the third one as it is just so involved and suspensful.Another amazing series that I can certainly recommend along with the Titanium series and the Suspense series all written by Ms Cross. A great author that I will certainly be watching for in the future.

Interesting read
This, for me at least, was an interesting read. I'd never really thought of a romance set in a military base in Afghanistan. I've no idea why as it's a fairly obvious scenario. However this, as always is a good write by Kaylea Cross and without spoiling anything it reads well with good lead characters, Devon and Cam and also the supporting ones. It stops a little abruptly. It contains military action and sex.

Fantastic story
If you are looking for and action packed gritty, edge of the seat romantic suspense look no further. This book had me gripped from start to finish. Set in Bagram during the war on terror it does not hold back on the horrors of the fighting. Yet it has a balance to it as we see the story fir both sides. The main story, however, is that of Devon a medivac pilot and Cam who is a PJ, a medically trained rescuer. The romance sizzles amidst the horrors of war. This is a re read for me as a new book has just come out. I enjoyed it as much as the first time.
