This means that some checks and changes need to happen to the vessel annually to ensure optimal performance should you need to use the extinguisher at any point. Just delivered and gauge is fully in the red on left hand side , assume this is faulty as should be pressurised?

Yes, I think you're right. The little arrow, on the gauge of my extinguisher, is and always has been, in the centre of the green panel. Well spotted!

Is this item suitable forbuse on a narrowboat, will it pass a BSC?

These extinguishers are perfect for a small living space, such as a narrowboat, because you only need the one and they are compact and easy to handle. They are fully compliant with the latest legal standard - BS EN 3 - 7 and they are CE marked.. I had mine checked out by my local fire safety officer who approved it. Looks like it would be a good buy for you.

What, specifically, is the extinguishing agent used in this product?

From the SDS sheet on their website, it's water + ammonium sulfate. Ammonium sulfate seems to be a fire retardant used in aerial forest fire fighting. However, I don't believe this is suitable for all fires, as they claim. It's corrosive, and DOT guidelines say, "· Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. · Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). · Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. · Containers may explode when heated. · For electric vehicles or equipment, GUIDE 147 (lithium ion batteries) or GUIDE 138 (sodium batteries) should also be consulted."
