Rigorous, Prayerful, Pastoral
I give this book five stars from every role I inhabit in my life.As a Catholic priest I preach out of the fruit that this book has helped grow regularly. As a philosophy teacher I trust the insights Sr. Schneiders provides because of the evident rigor of her scholarship and her deep application of philosophical hermeneutics to biblical scholarship - citations of Gadamer, Ricoeur, etc. can be regularly found. In my own relationship with God I find Sr. Schneider's attention to the spiritual consequences of her scholarship deepen my own prayer life.It is well worth the time of any person who is interested in understanding the Gospel of John.

Well worth reading as a commentary and spiritual reading book!
This book on the Fourth Gospel is clearly written. It is a commentary on the Gospel so there is in depth research that is worthy of the material. But, as the title suggests, Sandra Schneiders brings the reader to the spiritual reality of the Gospel that she emphasizes is the intent of the author of this Gospel. Well worth the read!

Sharply Written
Great read, highly informative, but very theological (feminist bend) and scholastic. Have a dictionary handy.

The gospel of John in new light
This book had been recommended to me by a very good friend in my search for more enlightened information on the gospel of John. It is obviously a feminist view of the scriptures but the research is scholarly and held to the highest standards. I would recommend it to anyone who has some basic background in scripture study and who has an open attitude toward the needs of the church and her people in these modern times.

Feminist perspective on the 4th Gospel.
This commentary connects many of the dots in the 4th Gospel in a thoughtful and liberating way. The book helps the reader to look beyond the traditional stereotypical views of women. Most importantly, there is a strong Christology contained here.

Excellent Study of the Gospel of John
This is an excellent book for anyone, lay or ordained, who seeks a deeper understanding of the Gospel of John. Dr. Schneider's insight from a feminist point of view gives one fresh perspective from which to view this scripture. I highly recommend this book.

Written That You May Belive: Encountering Jesus in the Fourth Gospel
Excellent discussion of the theology of the Fourth Gospel. Schneiders provides a fresh insight into the post-Jerusalem Church as it struggled with its own identity, faith and developing theology.

Feminist
I was impressed with the first five chapters then when she got into chapter six and seven I had to put it down. Schneiders definitely has a bias toward feminism: "...culturally based sexism of men who have monopolized power in the ecclesiastical institutions from the earliest days of the church's history have attempted to sacralize the monopoly by appeal to scripture" (p 96). And again: "...integration of the feminine into our God-experience and the full inclusion of women in the church that this implies" (p 125). She did use the lower case church in both cases. Schneiders has a doctorate in sacred theology. Her books are widely read. I would not consider her a marginalized woman in the Church. The fact that women do not hold ecclesiastical office appears to be a big problem to her. I'm sure if the Holy Spirit wanted women in ecclesiastical positions, He would have made it abundantly clear to the Bishop of Rome. As she alludes to in Chapter 5, women make the men. I am living proof of this, my wife has made me successful. The least common denominator for me are Gen 3:16c and the abundant number of female canonized saints. After all, the goal in life is to be a saint, not a priest or bishop. I now see why this book did not receive an imprimatur or nihil obstat.
