Review The Times 06/12/03 Excels in presentation has superb photographs and graphics that speak eloquently about the world's diversity, with easy to absorb information on ecology, geology and geography. Times Educational Supplement 26/09/03 This is a sensuous book. Some books appeal only to the intellect but this is a delight for the senses as well. Every page pleases the eye .it is a triumph of graphic art, even the finger tips are stimulated Dorling Kindersley is renowned for it's high production values, and this book is a classic. Adults and child, teacher and pupil, will find this a source of endless delight. Synopsis The world around us is made up of an extraordinary range of constantly changing landscape. Using an innovative visual approach, "Earth" provides a perspective on our planet's apparently infinite range of natural features and the system of interlinking forces that formed and continue to change them. At the core of the book is a series of visual catalogues of more than 400 of the most impressive, beautiful, or unusual places on Earth - from the Colorado River to the Atacama Desert, from the rainforets of Indonesia to the Antarctic Ice-sheet. These inspiring inventories of real phenomena are combined with explanations of the processes that have shaped our planet over its 4.6 billion years of turbulent history. See all Product description

Another great publication in DK's Visual Guides series
All the superlatives given by other reviewers are spot on. It continues DK's line of excellent popular Visual Guides, like Universe,Human: The Definitive Guide to Our Species and Animal among others.I've ordered a used copy of the 2003 hardcover edition, and its simply stunning. It's hard to put down. The quality of the glossy paper and the vivid pictures still hasn't faded a bit after 12 years, and its hard to compete with the wealth of information and the way it's presented.Pay attention to the fact that there a a few editions and also a compact one, with the Hardcover edition being a massive one both in size and weight. With a 1p price tag for many used copies of the older editions, it may be considered as an insult to say it's worth every penny, so I'll just conclude with a warm recommendation. The format is such that allows both adults and children to enjoy.Contains the following sections:PLANET EARTHLANDOCEANATMOSPHERETECTONIC EARTHeach divided to smaller chapters. Also available are TOC, Glossary and Index.

Beautiful book.
Wonderful book, packed with information and superb photography. I have only one problem with it, due to my elderly eyes. A lot of the captions are printed on the coloured ground of the pictures, and my eyes are no longer up to it. So when I get the book out I settle to read it with a torch in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other. However it's well worth the effort! I have several of these DK books (Earth, History and Universe,) and I love them.

Gret Book - Check Edition Before Purchase
This is a wonderful book to have around the house, excellent illustrations (photographs and diagrams) and great to mull over with your kids. But BE WARNED: This book comes in several editions - hard back, paper back and compact. The cover picture is the same on each edition, price and availability vary considerably. Be sure you are buying the one you really want (our home DK collection now has the full size Ocean and Animal titles but a rather diminutive looking "compact" Earth). Don't spoil your enjoyment of this highly rated book by accidentally picking up the wrong edition.

Stunning
A typical DK book. Written in an unfussy manner that's easy to read and full of stunning colour photos and illustrations. It's the sort of book that should be on everybody's bookshelf to dip into at regular intervals or when a you need a general reference book on geography, geology and the history of this little bit of rock we call home.

Bargain at 1000 times the price!
I of course mean the price before postage, which was a mere 1p. The book is massive and full of great pictures and covers a lot of the physical features of this fine planet. If I never even read it, my bookshelf is all the better for it being there.

Magnificent Photos, Good Descriptions
As a college geography professor I decided to require Earth as the textbook for my physical geography classes. Tired of the exorbitantly priced textbooks which empty students' wallets, I thought it would be worthwhile to order a cheaper, more accessible book which the students might want to read even after the course ended. Now as the semester is finishing I am mostly happy with my choice. Earth cuts down on the jargon which is part of most college geography classes, so I had to alter my lecture and change some of my exam questions. Also, the sequencing of topics is different than most physical geography texts and I found it necessary to tell students that "today's material is found on pages 110-111,116-119, and 252-253," not quite as simple as telling the students to read chapter 11. Nevertheless, my classes have loved using the text, which caters to the shortened attention spans of most students.I think any reader would enjoy picking up this book, thumbing to any page, and reading it for even a mere 5 minutes. The photos are beautiful and the captions alone are informative. Highly recommended!

DK is the best
I have about 20 DK books, and I have always been impressed with there layout, quantity of great pictures and quality of printing. This book has excellent pictures of city scapes, different land biomes, and geology. If I could add one complaint, I would insist on making a new volume with an expanded Oceania section. I love Oceania, and the section was good, but not as long as it should be considering 70% of earth is ocean, and the only thing that really sets our planet so much apart from all others currently discovered is water. All in all, this is no kids book, but if you have kids or grand kids that like to read, this book has enough pictures to keep any kid's imagination running for weeks, and if you're buying it for yourself it has enough information to make a college class of it.

No better earth book out there!
I have never seen so many beautiful pictures in a book before, and I have read many science books. As a Science Writer This is one of the books In my collection. It is full of high resolution, full color photos, and even talks about places where there is very little data on. Granted the pictures distract you from actually reading the books text, which is also very interesting. I have spent days taking notes out of this book. I first found this book at my school library, and Loved it, I HAD to put it in my collection. I really recommend this book for anyone who loves science!

Educational
I have too many books so can't say I've spent hours in this one, but interesting and well illustrated. Good for when wondering, why is that land formation like that? And no internet or electricity needed. No links to click on but can't have everything.

Earth. A hodge podge of everything that is our planet.
I have flipped through pages at first and found what I wanted to read about various topics and then....just started reading from the start. It's not finished yet mainly because it's more of a reference book for me. Besides the smaller than usual font, this little text is pretty good.
