are these comparable to Levi's 541 sizing and fit?

Absolutely. I LOVE my Levi's 541s and that is what prompted me to see if there were similarly styled slacks. Since Dockers and Levi's are sibling brands, I took a chance on the Dockers Athletic Fit slacks and it paid off! I have four pairs of 541s and 6 pairs of Dockers Athletic Fit slacks and I have not been disappointed.

Do these have a taper?

Yes, I believe they are tapered to 15 1/4" instead of the straight fit which measures 17+"

I previously ordered a size up and they're only a bit loose, perfect when sitting(36), should I go to my true size(34?)

if a belt makes the 36 waist ripple when standing because it is holding the pants up then go to the 34, otherwise, enjoy the comfort of the 36
