A Manual of the Slide Rule: Its History, Principle, and Operation

A great read
This was a very interesting read. it covers a lot of interesting history of the sliderule while also covering how to use it to speed up calculations and conversions. I don't know if it will come in handy, but If you are interested in mathematics or its history this is great. This book is approaching being 100 years old, which adds to its charm, but does not detract from its value.

Good Purchase
A real bibliographical jewel from the 1930's. Brief but interesting first chapter about slide rule history. Next chapters clear and detailed explanation how to use the slide rule, beginning with the use the scales of the Mannheim model, and then the use of scales of the log-log duplex rule. Plenty of clear examples. The last chapter briefly explains the use of the scales of some specialty slide rules, like the surveyor and chemist.Seller delivered earlier than promised date. Excellent packing. Great seller

Great Book for Learning About the Slide Rule
This is a great book for learning about the slide rule. It is easy to understand and gives the basics of how to use a slide rule for those of us who are still interested in learning how to use a slide rule.

If you are interested in how to live without calculator
I liked the thoroughness of the book. I disliked the language of the 1930s

Very nice book on Slide rule use, theory and history!
I got this book to review and re-learn some of the finer nuances of using various slide rule functions and operations. I recently acquired some older rules in great shape from my father, who used them many years ago before the advent of calculators (electronic ones), and they're really neat! This book has great examples, and general information on use of various scales for operations. It is well done, being a reprint of the 1930s book. The only thing I do not like about the book is a lack of visual examples (diagrams with rule positions), which would illustrate better the functions which are more challenging, like number bases and special logarithm scales. I guess in the "golden-oldie" days, that was less common, and hence that portion of the update was not done to retain the "essence" of the book. But with some effort and practice, one can learn how to do such operations. :)Recommended as it is a great value and one of the few remaining books on these instruments of calculation which were the foundation for engineering and science for decades prior to me coming onto the planet! (I'm a boomer who learned via electronic LED calculators when I was in school - the slide rule was a dinosaur by then). But - I believe these skills, they are important to re-learn and retain... just as with Navigation; a compass and map sound archaic today, But if/when satellites and GPS signals fail or have issues, one can still find one's way!Highly recommended reference updated somewhat from a bygone era! Thanks!

Portal to a never ending past
Amongst best works ever written on this magic, yet easy for everyone to understand, mechanical ANALOG calculator, the Slide-Rule. Again, after 40 years, I felt proud being able to fully engage my 57/80 Log-Log Faber Castell and my Pickett N600 Log-Log Slide-Rules into some very exciting teaching projects, by using this book.John, Athens, Greece
