Q: Which type of additional camera should be bought?

I bought 2 sets in order to get two cameras. Use the monitor and go to the menu, once there click Left, Left, Right, Right, then "Talk". This will open a new menu that will allow you to pair a new camera. I was able to add the 2nd camera on the monitor! It only allowed to add up to 2 cameras in my monitor, tried with a third one to no success. I have 3 of them working in my phone with no issues!

Q: I work nights and would like to be able to check in on them . Does the app work miles away via phone app also ?

Yes, I am in the US and my dad can check it on his phone app in Canada

Q: Can you access the camera via phone app only? Want to use it remotely to check on elderly parent. No need for local. Do you have to pair parent unit?

Hi - The parent unit of the VTech VM901 is automatically paired with the baby unit. You ca access the camera using the app as long as it is connected via WiFi. Thank you for your interest!
