Spectacular battles, but as a whole the film tries to cover too much ground.
SUMMARYThe film's too generic and tries to cover too much ground. Visually stunning battle set-pieces, but don't have high expectations elsewhere - don't expect great dialogue or in-depth characters or clarity on who's doing what where. Sometimes for 2+ hours of entertainment, it's fine to want something that merely rolls the scenery by and hopefully keeps you going with some explosions - I enjoyed the film on that basis. It's not too historically inaccurate which is more of a plus than it seems.DETAILSThe director Roland Emmerich is jack of all scene-types, master of one. He's known for big spectacle ('Independence Day', '2012') and he delivers the set-piece battle scenes competently thanks to experience and a massive $100 million budget. The large distance camera sweeps and close-up details are watchable and quite thrilling, even though the aerial dogfights feel like a video game due to the CGI (maybe I've played too much 'Flight Simulator'). Dialogue during these set-pieces comes from a comic-book or, for aerial dogfights, from 'Star Wars'. It's such a shame but intervening scenes lack sparkle, characters lack depth, and dialogue isn't memorable but merely OK.This wasn't the time to entrust a blockbuster's screenwriting to a first-timer (Wes Tooke). The underwhelming dialogue could've been written by me or by a child; too many go-get'em speeches; unimportant scenes (e.g. husband-wife) or implausible scenes (pre-battle breakfast) are given too much airtime, significant events (e.g. identifying AF) not enough. The film is too short for covering Pearl Harbor, the Marshall Islands expedition and Dolittle's raid properly: there should've been less airtime to Pearl Harbor as everyone knows what happened, and more airtime to the other two ops. Characters lack depth and for most their appearances are like cameos. Once the film starts concentrating on Midway, at least an hour in, the plot could've and should've been a clear and tight plot, but the impact is diluted by trying to cover too many bases and too many characters. Occasional screen captions stating place and distance aren't enough to give you a mental map of who's where when. War is messy and confusing - a film shouldn't be. Perhaps all the film needed was tighter editing and another 15 minutes to depict missing/inadequate details.NITPICK - HISTORICAL ACCURACYWorld War 2's been a hobby of mine for decades. I reckon 'Midway' is more historically accurate than Hollywood's usual propaganda revisionism, and that's a good reason for watching it. There are some inaccuracies and I don't understand the reason for them e.g. why depict the Japanese Zero as equal to the American Dauntless when in real life the Dauntless could never match the speed of the Zero? - lazy writing? The identification of AF is solved with a few lines of dialogue, but the drama of that justifies a scene with more movement, if necessary in exchange for a couple of the husband-wife "stop your war work for a few hours, you need rest" cliches. Also, Arizona sailors going hand over hand on ropes between ships comes from the 2016 book 'All the Gallant Men' and credit should've been given. There's a long page on imdb listing historical inaccuracies.PLOT WITH SPOILERSThe film follows several USA pilots, sailors, senior officers, and the relationship of some with their wives, from the build-up to the war with Japan. Pearl Harbor, and the USA thirst for revenge, the Marshall Islands op, and the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo - these take up roughly an hour. The film then leads up to and and culminates in the Battle of Midway. Some Japanese commanders are also given scenes to make the foe human, to be respected or sympathised with (barbaric treatment of POWs and civilians by the Japanese notwithstanding).

More Serious And Earnest Than The Comic Book Version I Was Expecting
I didn't think much of the trailer when I first watched it.The CGI looked pretty poor to me and the action sequences looked unrealistic.I went into this with low expectations expecting a laugh at it and give up with it half way through.I didn't see any point remaking the 1970's film which had it's flaws but was faithful to actual events.Inevitably I have to compare the two.Casting Woody Harelsson as Admiral Nimitz is an eye brow raiser. Not because he can't do it but because some performers come with baggage that inevitably makes it hard to accept them in certain roles. It distracts the mind a little. I felt Dennis Quaid was spot on as Halsey. Look at pictures of the real Admiral Halsey and you can see straight away the person he was and Dennis Quaid I think read that very well.I was expecting a comic book romantic version of the battle but instead I was surprised the film followed a serious story arc before even the USA entered the war. Events such as Pearl Harbour, the Doolitle Raid and even the battle of Coral Sea all get screen time to lead up to and explain the Midway battle. The actors seem very earnest and although I am no historian, the major strategy events look correct. I was particularly surprised by the vital role played by the submarine USS Nautilus. I'd never noticed this before. The CGI is better than I expected. You kind of get used to it but only because you hardly ever see any real planes so you never have a point of comparison. Some of the scenes are however just too busy and colourful making it feel like a Star Wars movie. The 1970’s Midway film had to stitch in real wartime footage ( not always from world war 2 ) which was equally a big problem for that film.As already stated the big picture military strategy looks correct but some of the air combat seemed pretty unlikely to me. A bit like the blockbuster Pearl Harbour, some of the air to air combat didn’t seem plausible. Dauntless Dive Bomber gunners seem to have a very high success rate shooting down enemy Zero fighters and in one scene a Dauntless shoots down a Zero fighter using forward firing guns.Overall though I have to say I was satisfied with the film. The subject was taken seriously and I kept watching.I liked the links at the end to the real people involved. It presumably brings a key 20th century battle to a younger audience which otherwise they could be quite ignorant about. In terms of strategy and narrative I do think a casual viewer might find it difficult to consume it all. The 1970’s Midway film I think explained fewer key things more clearly. For example the importance of the change in plan from bombing Midway's runway a second time to instead arming to attack the US carriers could be lost a bit in the breadth and depth of events and drama of the remake. The CGI and questionable air to air combat dropped a star but otherwise I give this a thumbs up.Something I never expected after watching the trailer.
