Paulette, the favorite sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, is a beautiful, flirtatious woman. Obsessed with social appearances, the French emperor disapproves of the men Paulette is drawn to, sending her suitors off to distant battlefronts. He arranges loveless marriages for her with a general (who dies of yellow fever in the Antilles) and an Italian prince (who refuses to divorce her when she falls in love with dashing cavalryman, Jules de Canouville). Despite this constant interference in her personal life, Paulette remains loyally devoted to her brother. When Napoleon is sent into exile following a string of military defeats, the only person he trusts to accompany him to Elba is his loving Paulette. Gina Lollobrigida, the "Most Beautiful Woman in the World" (a tag she earned by appearing in the 1956 film of the same name) is best remembered as the sultry Sheba opposite Yul Brenner's suave King Solomon in King Vidor's 1959 epic, Solomon and Sheba. A later successful second career as a photo-journalist had her scooping the world's press with an exclusive interview with Fidel Castro.

Resolution suffers
Great movie with Gina Lollobrigida and Steven Boyd, but the resolution is not of standard DVD quality. It must have been transferred from a VHS copy. However, Gina L stands out, looking as beautiful as ever.

Gorgeous movie - authentic French Italian production with amazing actress
I am so glad to be able to watch this fine addition to Napoleonic movies done reasonably closed to historic atmosphere and the events. Costumes and Bonaparte family dynamic comes alive on the screen. Gina as Paulette is incredibly beautiful and great match to the role - she holds the screen even in a long scenes (and director did put quite a few of them - movie looks more vibrant when there plenty of dialogs and pace is more real life one). I would recommend to watch it even in this foggy quality for a quite unique coverage of very interesting historic figure - European life in Napoleonic era is so complex for personas large and small - it’s treasure when we can get a glimpse even in theatrical depiction. Thank you, Amazon for adding it to the collection.

Disappointing.....
Actually, I didnt even get that far into the film to see if it is decent or not.The quality of this DVD is absolutely THE WORST Ive encountered. It was so bad I couldnt even watch it because the quality of the copied print was so horrible....too bad...the costuming at least looked fun!If anyone ever comes up with a decent print Id like to watch it.....

A cut dubbed version of a fine film
IMPERIAL VENUS is a fine effort by the great late French director Jean Delannoy and shows Gina Lollobrigida at the peak of her beauty, at age 35. The Italian actress won the David di Donatello Award (the Italian equivalent of the Academy Award) for this film, a biography of Paolina Borghese, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte and one of the most fascinating women of her time.Unfortunately, this is not the Supertechnirama 70mm version of the film, originally made in Italian. What we have is a cut, standard version which has not been digitally restored. The excellent cinematography by Gabor Pogany is not in pristine condition, showing faded colors and little definition.Although Lollobrigida dubbed the English and French versions, it would have been better to have released the film in Italian with English and French subtitles, as the actress' line readings are far more natural and spontaneous in her native tongue. The production is sumptuous, the screenplay is literate, and the acting of the supporting cast is generally good. If anything, the wonderful Micheline Presle could have had more screen time as Josephine. The editing impresses a slow rhythm to the film, which does not always serve it well.On the whole, this DVD is worth having, especially if one is a Lollobrigida fan, since the film has not yet been rereleased in Italy or France in DVD format.

Gina...wow
Poor quality transfer...maybe copied directly from an old VHS tape...but the movie itself is most entertaining. Gina Lollobrigida is a joy to watch. Her acting ability is equal to her beauty. The story holds the viewers interest even with the poor picture quality.

Very Bad!
The movie is very bad, it has cuts and it is not the original one, it seems like someone recorded it from TV, I think they should say on details all this things about it, because I wouldn't have bought it!

Sweeping colourful and dramatic story of one of Napoleon 1st's sisters.
Although the picture quality is not great, (and this is one film that I would love to see restored), the colours, action, and the portrayal of remarkable people and their historical lives sweeps you along. This is a welcome addition to any collection of Napoleonic films.

so far no remastered version available.
This is NOT a re-mastered release so the quality just won't be there. However, this I believe is the only version available on the market today. I look forward to the restored version. Also this version is 121 min long, not the 90 min as advertised and not the original 140 minutes. So if you want to see this movie this is about the best price and only quality.
