YA book about Black girls, art, high school, first in a must read series
Teens will love this series about black girls who excel and love many different forms of art in an art school located in Harlem. I read the first book, Lux: The New Girl #1 (Flyy Girls) as part of the #BitAboutBooks Winter Reading Challenge, 2 Books by Same Author (I will be reading the 2nd one soon, can't wait!) Lux has anger issues, lots going on in school-bullying and fighting, and a Dad with a new family. As Lux is introduced she is fighting a girl who has been bullying her; Lux is suspended and her mom at her wits end, send Lux to live with her Dad with the threat if this new school does not work out she will be sent to military school. What follows is lots of drama for Lux as she navigates her new life with her father. Very readable and enjoyable

Loved it!
Great story...easy to read for my 12 year old (and I listened to the audio book). My daughter says the book was interesting to read. She liked the tone, style, and subject matter. We are ordering the next one in the series!

Pretty Good
This was a quick, easy read. The drama between the teen girls felt authentic. Lux was really likable. I found myself rooting for her from the onset. I wish more would’ve been said about dealing with her anger issues. I’m hoping it’ll be addressed later in the series. I’m also hoping for more of Lux and Emmett. He’s so charming. This first book sucked me in enough to want to read the rest of the series.

Fun read
LUX: The new girl #1By: Ashley WoodfolkLux is a part of the four book Flyy Girls series about four Harlem High School students dealing with themes about friendship, family, coming-of-age stories and love.In this book #1, Lux Lawson is struggling every since her dad left their family to just stay in school. She is on her last chance with Harlem's Augusta Savage School of the Arts. Make it there or Lux is off to military school. All Lux has to do is stay out of trouble and be nice.I found that the writing is incredible easy to read, it will definitely immerse you into the story and I can see how young adults of all ages will enjoy the series and find a connection with any one of these Flyy girls to look up to and understand some of their similar struggles and challenges. I think that the story was well told, quick and fun reads.I really enjoyed this one and cannot wait to get a hold of the other three books in the series.

amazing start to a new younger YA series!
(Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)Lux: The New Girl is a fabulous start to a YA series about a group of girls. It's a series that celebrates friendship, each delving further into one of the Flyy Girls. Lux's story is one focused on trying to alter our image. About starting fresh and choosing to be someone else. She's been expelled three times and the Augusta Savage School of the Arts is her last chance. Lux: The New Girl navigates her coming to terms with her father's new family, and priorities, still struggling with how he left her.

Anger and redemption
This was wayy to short, yet it was so good. I like that Lux gets some redemption in the end. I hope she finds ways to better handle her anger and that things with her father get better. Can't wait to read the rest of the books on this series.

Start to a great series with wonderfully developed characters!
After reading When You Were Everything, I knew Ashley Woodfolk could write characters. It was still so impressive to read Lux's story -- she's such a fully developed character, she has a solid arc, and her story was both interesting and well paced... all in such a short space! I loved the way the story was both serious and fun; Ashley always manages to find just the right balance. This was a great intro to the Flyy Girls. After finishing this one, I immediately dove into book two! Thank you Penguin Teen for a free advanced digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Short, Enjoyable Read
I was a little uncertain of this book when I first started, but after the first section at Lux's old school I got really into it and read it all in one sitting. It's short - less than 150 pages - and a very quick read over all. Lux was an intriguing main character with her hot temper and her recognition of her own flaws. I enjoyed her growth over the course of this short book and am looking forward to getting to know the other Flyy Girls better in future installments to the series.
