We love reading this to my son and looking at the pictures together, he loves it when we speak 'Chickenese'! How refreshing to find a picture book that tells such a fun story from another culture. I love the Lantana collection and will definitely be buying more of these beautiful books.

Great story, very colourful
This great story is very colourful and bold. Not for you if you don't like stories with spirits in but otherwise very satisfying for a young reader.

An inviting story
A Nigerian story involving an unwanted visitor arriving in Anyaugo’s kitchen on the night before the New Yam Festival. Fearful for the fate of the food made by her family, Anyaugo turns to spiritual help and summons her own strength to confront the cheeky intruder- but all may not be as it seems!A fabulous book which offers a platform for traditional celebration in West Africa, whilst also opening eyes to the masquerade spirits celebrated within these communities. Themes of respect and courage are intertwined throughout, producing a relatable journey within a context that may be unfamiliar for some readers. Okorafor also allows for a little bit of humour through some lovely dramatic irony between the doings of a certain naughty character, which would tickle some children.Amini’s illustrations are really intriguing. I particularly enjoyed the contrasts drawn between times of security and danger, with moments of uncertainty and fear being distinguished by blanketing the setting in shadows. This only draws the eye to the greatness and mystery of the less welcome chicken, awash with rich colours. During the time of celebration, the feeling of importance surrounding such a special time are heightened through the vibrant patterns, whilst also remaining evocative of the clothes worn within this culture. This is a warm and inviting story for any reader.

Excellent children's book
I'm not sure who was more delighted by this book: my daughter or myself. It's got a fantastic, fun, deep story, the kind that you want to read to your children over and over again. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated, this is the kind of book that makes me happy to still have kids and a good armchair.
