Good Intro to the 2012 version
I hadn't used SQL Server since 2007 and I needed a reintroduction. This isn't so much in-depth as it is a taste of all the things you can do with SQL Server, including new features. You can download the sample code but I find it more worth the effort to type it in myself, so that I can think the processes through while I type (I just understand and learn better that way). None of the samples are very long so it's not difficult. You should have a little bit of familiarity with SQL Server - not a lot, this will be too simple otherwise.I almost gave it four stars instead of five for the errata - the sample code seems to be free of error and I had to go to it once when I didn't understand the error messages I was getting. Nonetheless, it was the right book for me to jump into this new version after years of not using SQL Server and get my feet wet again.

but it's always good to start from the basics
There are some basic steps here, but it's always good to start from the basics, especially when you are learning new modules. The book does a great job of walking you through and explaining why you are selecting the options that the book is telling you to select. some books just tell you to click this, check that, but don't go into why or what's the purpose of the selection. This is a good book to have on your desk for reference.

The book is written in a very organized way
This book deserves a five star! I was new in the field and bought a paperback copy then. The book is well written in an organized way which makes easy to understand the concepts clear and concise.Hence, easy to understand. I will definitely recommend it to anyone looking to understand the basics of SQL SERVER.

Good Crash Course
Like others here I'm familiar with DBs, concepts and have even used it years back, but this was a fast way to get acquainted with the current menus and features with logical steps. I got the kindle first then decided I want a hard copy. I also have a huge reference book, but who can learn anything from them? They are for looking up specifics after you already know a system.

Good instructional book so far..... If anyone is reading this and I purchase from you, please don't be dismayed or disappointed when/if you don't get a review from me. I will deal with you individually. If I don't return it, I loved it.

I find this book to be an excellent guide for learning Microsoft SQL Server 2012
I find this book to be an excellent guide for learning Microsoft SQL Server 2012. It starts with a brief history for SQL, and holds your hand as it walks you through every step of how to get it up and working on a high level. This is an excellent publication.

Be sure to check the errata page
This book covers a lot, but nothing in depth. I tried using it as a textbook, but it didn't fit the bill. It's a good primer for the true beginner. Be sure to check the errata page, as it is substantial.

Excellent Starting Point
I'm currently refreshing my SQL Server Skills which I've not used for about 10 years now. Things have moved on quite a bit since SQL Server 2000. I'm about half way through this book and it's providing a very useful overview of the current SQL Server environment (e.g using the Object Explorer, Management Studio, Query writer etc)This book will not by itself get you through the exams but a very useful intro prior to moving onto the official microsoft training kits.Recommended for absolute beginners and as a refresher.

It is what it says...
... a step-by-step guide, but it didn't seem to lead me anywhere I needed to be. Kept it for now, but I'm not sure if it will prove useful.
