Yes I haven't tried this but it should be fine.

Q: Is the line output level fixed or variable?

You choose between pre-amp mode (variable line-out) or fixed line-out in the options.

Q: Any thoughts about this vs the fx audio dac-x6? thinking of upgrading and linking to my aiyima a08 pro (desktop use)

I can recommend the Loxjie. I connect my iPad via Bluetooth or (better) usb to lightning cable. The Loxjie is connected to my amp via rca cable - I don't tend to use as headphone amp. I know nothing about the fx audio box but I cannot see any comparison between an item costing £260 and one costing £65. One important feature of the Loxjie is the in-built power supply.
