Q: Have you had luck preventing squirrels from emptying this feeder even if it is mounted with less than the recommended 18 inches of clearance?

No you need at least that much clearance. You would be amazed at the acrobatic skills of the squirrels, paired along with their determination, in reaching the feeders. They have figured out to hang on by their toes, stret-c-h, grab feeder with the front claws and eat out of it. BUT I have mine hanging with less the amount of recommended clearance. By far these are still the best feeders I have found and I feed a large variety of birds.

Q: Do you find that the birds empty this quickly? It obviously depends on how many birds are using it, but I'm trying to see what the average is.

It depends on the season. Sometimes a week, sometimes several weeks. We have lots of different feeders and the variation in how quickly each is emptied is interesting. This one is close to a window and I find that the outer side gets more attention. It is mostly used by flickers, red bellied woodpeckers and downy woodpeckers, though this week the chickadees have started to favor it. And the house sparrows sometimes use it as well.

Q: Has anyone figured out to mount a weather guard on Brome Peanut Feeded?

I haven't had any problem with the peanuts getting wet. There are weather guard shields that have a hook both from the top hanging and underside hook that I use for a open tray feeder that would work.

Q: Once a squirt gets on the feeder, it doesn’t go back up on its own. I have to manually move it so the birds can access the nuts. Is this right or am ?

It works with a spring. So when a squirrel gets on it, the outer “cage” drops down due to his weight, but once the squirrel is gone it springs back up again so the nuts can be reached by the birds. You won’t have to do anything but add nuts once in awhile.
