What is the cable for? Some reviews say "cable operated" but the cable will be hidden once the drain is installed. I dont get it.

The knob at top turns to actuate the drain stopper. The cable links the two to make that possible.

Fits a standard factory hole. Don't know the dimensions, but as long as the hole has not been altered, it should fit.

Is there a gold finish version of this product?

Try another brand or consider painting the chrome. It is cheap and easy. Gold trim is hard to find. Unfortunately it is not currently in style. I had a similar problem try to match my existing plumbing hardware (faucets, etc) with a new shower door. I just primed it 3 times and top coated 3 times with a good quality spray paint made for metal. I used Rustoleum. No problems. You can use whatever but my advice is to make sure it is a paint made for metal and intended for outdoor use as the trim will be exposed to constant moisture in the shower.

How reliable is this mechanism. When it breaks, it is a massive job to replace - pulling tub out, removing tile, etc. Will it last 30 years?

My plumber told me this was the "top of the line" drain system. We have not had any problems with it. Cannot comment to longevity, but even so, you would not have to pull out the tub replace. Typically you have access through the wall behind the shower so you wouldn't have to remove a tiled wall. Install an access panel if you are very concerned.

Good quality chrome but thin PVC pipe

The chrome is a good quality, doesn't scratch, relatively thick. The pipe is cheap quality PVC. Very thin, and brittle. Spout mechanism works easily, closes fully, no water leaks and drain open up enough for a quick drining of water from tub. Overall, good purchase and MUCH cheaper on Amazon than in a plumbing supply store and MUCH better quality control than HDepot, where these type of boxes get picked clean by shoplifters. Good, safe, buy on this site.

Nice look but not always easy to operate.

The drain knob can come off easily when our kids are playing with it in the bath and can be hard to turn with a wet hand.

Update from a previous 1 star

This part installed perfectly on our new Kohler tub, however the stopper will not close so that water stays in the tub. Called Kohler and they were very helpful. They are sending me a new stopper part which I should receive tomorrow. We’ll see how that one works. I’ll post an update when I get it.Update: I had a master plumber take a look at our drain and found that the the piece that fits on top of the tub drain did not have a proper amount of plumbers paddy (installed by the original contractor) to create the necessary seal to stop the water when the drain plug was lowered. It is working perfectly and after the correction, I’d have to rate this Five Stars *****.
