Fun and whip smart
One of the most academic and fascinating movies and funniest movies I have seen. The acting is great. The screenwriting is some of the best.If someone isn’t nerdy enough to be into economics, they might still enjoy the roller coaster ride of the story.

Good story but just one small piece of a much bigger puzzle.
Good movie. I was 28 when the housing bubble popped in 2008. I remember the news on the radio the day they announced the Lehman Bros. collapse. Luckily, for me, I was so poor that the collapse of the banks and the loss of jobs that millions of people around the world suffered didn't affect me at all. I still woke up every day and went to work hauling produce in from the fields to the factory for processing. The movie has a top-notch cast and is written about as well as it could be. It's still taken me many years and watching the movie multiple times to finally get a solid grasp on the story being told. The Big Short, Margin Call, Too Big To Fail, The Last Days of Lehman Brothers - all good movies if you're looking for a dramatized view of the 2008 financial crisis. Up in the air touches on it too but from a different perspective. The housing market collapse in 2008 led to millions of people becoming unemployed and homeless when their himes were foreclosed on and the lending market drying up. Businesses of all sizes closed because they couldn't afford to stay open. They couldn't get loans and their debts were being called due by lenders. The big short is a great story about a few people who saw what was about to happen, placed bets against the institutions that traded in mortgage bonds and cashed out when everything collapsed.

An amazing, though slightly unsatisfying film
If you're asking, "Should I watch this?" Most definitely. There are scenes in this film that shock, amaze, surprise and delight -- and it's a true story of our world, at least true enough to learn from. In those ways, it really delighted me.As strictly a film, I was left wanting more but I don't think anyone could have done better. You see, the challenge here is we are watching a movie called, "The Big Short." It's not about the people who got hurt or the even the criminals who instigated this big fraud. It's about the people who see an impending catastrophe in the financial system and they realize they can profit off of it. They can win big but what they couldn't know at the beginning is how corrupt the financial markets were and how bad that market crash would be when the chickens came home to roost. Two hours to tell this story when, arguably, the most compelling part is all the people who got screwed, the people who lost their homes, their jobs, their lives. The film knows this, that ultimately it's about the folks who weren't heroes but just as greedy as the rest of Wall Street, even if they were right... even if they saw the system as corrupt. They were still willing to profit from the corrupt system. What an incredibly challenging story to tell and ultimately I think the movie kept these very interesting characters at the cost of a clearer narrative. I would have made the same choice if I were directing. Such an incredibly rich story and while we allude to our main characters deeper lives, we don't get to live with them very much. Maybe it should have been two films? Or maybe three films where we follow the characters for Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Brad's boys? Would have gave them all enough room to breathe as fully formed characters -- and what amazing performances.Ultimately, though, this is the film that could get made and I'd rather have all those stories. All of the pieces present to get the fuller picture than be missing the rich tapestry here.Excellent effort, delightful performances, and work that everyone should be proud of.
