Is this too hard for a 12 month old child

It completely depends on the child. I got this for my son when he was 18 months, and it's been a huge hit. It has 6 buckles and a zipper.

How big is the pouch in the whale's mouth? Big enough to store other small toys in?

It is small but we have hidden small toys in there. My cell phone fits but one of those sofie toys would be too big.
