Q: What is the length of the support- both closed and extended?

he support arm (14.5" long) doesn't "close," it simply slides back and forth inside the "holding case" ( about 4-5" long) that screws to the underside of the table. So, since the holding case is 4-5" long and the support arm is 14.5 " long, if you were to screw the holding case at the very edge of your table and then slide the support arm for the drop leaf, you'd have approximately 9.5 inches of arm support for your drop leaf. (Note, the other 4-5" of the support arm is still encased in the holding case, make sense?) I hope that makes sense. Regardless, these are a good deal & hold a lot of weight. I was using them with a 16" drop leaf - that means 9.5" of the support arms were supporting up a 16" extension (of pine board); and that pine board was 36" wide, so while pine is not heavy, like oak, it was still quite a bit of weight and I was resting my upper body weight on it too when I had my elbows on the leaf. And while I'm only 95 lbs, that's still quite a bit of added pressure. Someone said their son bent these supports. HA! Not POSSIBLE! Unless her son weighs 1000 lbs! These are strong! I'm getting more. :)

Q: Why are the front and rear holes not the same diameter or depth? Front are flush and rear are a 1/8” countersunk dimple. Bracket surface is not even.

It puts the bracket at an angle so the sliding arm will bring your leaf flush. If you look at the top of the support arm, it is not flush with the top of the bracket. The angle allows you to use the product without mortising in the bracket at all.

Q: How much weight can these support? I'm thinking of using a pair to support a 14" by 36" drop/fold down desk surface.

We used these on a small dining table and they work very well - the table is solid oak so the screws will not pull out - don't sit on it but it will hold dishes and normal eating weight - try not to use the leaf as a support to stand but they should work for normal use.
