How well does this set work on carpet floors?

That is where it works the best! It's short for shin hockey and the carpet provides cushion for the knees. My son and husband have long games of this on the livingroom carpet and it's tons of fun!

Do the sticks work for a left handed player?

Not sure if I got different sticks than the others' here, but the orange stick is curved for a left-handed player, and the yellow stick is curved for a right-handed player. The extendable sticks are in fact straight so they would work for either handedness.

Would this be ok for a 12 year old? or too small? just for indoors

Yes Just indoors. It would be knee hockey for a 12 year old, but they may find it too small. I am 6 foot and use it to play with my daughters 4 and 2 as well as my nephews when they come over who are 10 and 9 and i think it is perfect. I don't mind sitting off to the side of the net and playing goalie.
