SONY's best non-pro camera, even better than their 4D cameras
It's a 4 in most things and a 5 in many, giving it a 5 due to overall high quality with no weaknesses. The 4D camera's are heavy and have poor stabilization so this HD is great. Such a shame they no longer make it (as far as I'm aware).

Works great!
I bought this camera so I can post better videos to YouTube and for family occasions, of course. The video is great and looks wonderful on large HDTV's. Set up took me a few minutes and the initial use was great. I recorded a few videos and tried down loading them onto my computer. I found that it was easier with the suggested program ("app") "Play Memories Home". It will automatically import the new video(s) for you with little hassle, once it is set up. BTW, be careful during set up! This program will want to import every photo and video you have on your computer. It's best to limit it's access/permissions until you are ready to trust it and use it to it fullest potential. The only down side is the battery life. The battery is the smallest Sony makes for this model and I had to buy larger and longer lasting batteries for it. I also bought the AC adapter for it (not included) so I don't have to use batteries while recording here at home. Over-all, this is a great camcorder and I have already posted videos to YouTube and my subscribers like the improved video and sound quality.

Endless battery life, great Sony/Zeiss image quality, so so audio
Finally, a camcorder with usable battery life! In fact, battery lasts for hours and hours - wow! This was my main obstacle to buying a camcorder before.Add to it an excellent zoom, Zeiss lens (trust me - there's no lens like Zeiss lens... they've been one of the world's top lens makers since 1860 - and a quality lens makes a huge difference), a tiny size, decent handling of a great variety of lighting situations, and enough manual controls for you to feel in charge, and you have a wonderful camera that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Some of the friends I worked with complained that it makes their footage look shabby :-).My only beef is middling audio. Yes, it's decent enough for simple work, but it's not very directed (sometimes it feels like the sound from anywhere but the front of the camera is louder), there's a slight background noise originating with device itself, and you can hear any handling of camera. However, that's not a problem either, as this perfect little camera has a plug for an external microphone too, so I can simply plug in whichever fancy mic I want...

Bought as “Good”
I bought the camera as “good”! It was defective! The HDMI MICRO out was defective! Could not get a feed to my television! After carefully looking at the HDMI out I noticed how loose the jack was! I immediately returned requesting a full refund!

Sony Handycam Lineup
I use these everyday. I've gone through a bunch of them and only use Sony.. This one is/was my favorite until the swing out door broke at the hinge. I repaired it once and put new screws into it, which also broke off again.. It has great zoom vs the new 4k Sony FDR AX43. Picture not nearly as good as the new 4k but that's obvious.Sony problems. The USB connection cable in the handle will break. It has broke on all 5 of my previous cameras. The concept is great and the cable works wonderful when connected to PC to upload files and to charge.

Great camera for the price.
I can't believe some of the mediocre reviews this camera is getting. For the price you can't beat it. It's got unbelievable image stabilization and records at great image quality. It's compact and relatively easy to use. Does it work well in really low light? Of course not! If you expect it to at this price and size you're totally unreasonable. Do you have to use menus to set it up and maybe read the owner's manual for guidance? Of course! All things considered, this is a wonderful camera. It's not going to do everything a $5,000 camera will. It does what it claims to and does it well.

Already looking for its replacement, Minimal upgrade for the price, missing features/poor design
I will keep this short many other reviews cover all the finite details. I will cover what stands out to me about this camera for good and bad.I purchased this camera for making Youtube videos, primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. I will start with the best things. Image stabilization is excellent and paired with the zoom you can use this to see things clearly far away without a tripod, animals, terrain, targets the like. The battery life is good, not great but good be warned it will drop fast in cold weather essentially halving the time under 30f thereabouts so plan accordingly. There is an external mic input which is good because the onboard mic is useless in all but perfectly calm weather. Now for the biggest negatives. The mic input is under the screen.... so to plug the mic in you have to open the screen which turns on the camera, plug the mic in then close the screen on top of the mic cord and open the screen back up so the camera will register the external mic. OR you can leave the mic plugged in with the screen partly open and deal with dust and debris on the screen ( this is while moving position or in between filming, while hiking etc), bad design in my use.Image quality, its ok. Not as sharp as I would like, it was not much of an improvement over my last camera. The Sony proprietary shoe sucks, you have to purchase an adapter to use a normal shoe ( mic or light etc) or purchase the over priced and not much better than stock proprietary sony external boom mic. This forced me to rig up a side mount for my RODE mic using heavy duty velcro, my a6000 has this too and is why my next camera will not be from a brand that has any proprietary attachment points. For the money there is no night shot mode. This is my fault for overlooking this at purchase time I assumed it was included because of the price, I was wrong and this thing is grainy and worthless in all but *good* lighting this means for filming in dark areas ( tents and shelters,my garage ) I have to bring extra lighting. The menu system is not very intuitive, it just isnt. I is frustrating to change some settings and you have to start all over at the beginning of the menu when you want to go back one page.OK so to wrap up, this camera comes with an external mic port but is finicky to plug in, has great image stabilization and decent battery life, the actual recorded image is nothing above or beyond especially in lower light (very grainy) the shoe dosnt accept normal accessories without an adapter, and there is no night shot mode. All for 500 bucks. Just not impressed and am looking for a new camera and probably a new brand as well.
