yes if you have it on the 4x4 that chimes every 15 minutes then on the hour, if you click just the Westminster or bim bam melody it chimes only on the hour, no quarter hour, you can turn off chimes and it wont sound at all or click off from 11.00 pm to 5.45 am. It doesn't bother me and I sleep thru it. it doesn't play the whole chime, on the 1/4 hour there are 4 notes on half hour there are 8 notes 3/4 hour 12 notes on the hour 16 notes and then it counts the hour, so if your in other room you can tell the time by listening to it.

Q: can I replace plastic pendulum with a metal pendulum?

The pendulum on this clock does not regulate the time. The pendulum is just for show. Replacing the pendulum would just be a personal preference to you. Try running the clock for a day without any pendulum and you will see it should keep time. You could hang a banana inside and it would still keep time, but it might draw fruit flys.

Q: Is this clock made of actual wood or faux wood?

This is made from real wood. The back is laminated plywood, but it is a very nice looking clock and I have had no problems at all with mine.
