A 'must read' for anyone with an interest in The Troubles
An interesting timeline on the Ulster Volunteer Force from it's inception in the second decade of the 20th century through to it's 'standing down' following the Good Friday Agreement and the murderous feud within Loyalism that resulted from a split within the UVF and the founding of the Loyalist Volunteer Force. Throw in the IRA and the war of Nationalism which spiralled into sectarian tit for tat killings and you have a rich history of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Few books have detailed the history, personalities and politics of the UVF like this one. A must read for anyone with an interest in the conflict referred to as "The Troubles".

Good book
Anyone who thought the IRA had a monopoly on killing should read this book. The UVF were some of the most blood thirsty scum to ever walk the earth. This book made me very happy to have not grown up in N.I. The amount of random killing of Catholics actually made me sick. These people were serial killers and not defenders of their community.

The Best Most Authoritive Book On The UVF
And an ideal start to reading about the Ulster Volunteer Force’s role in modern Irish history. There is no effort here to revise history or see the UVF as deluded reactionary guerrillas. The book is superb on the diverse forces who brought Ireland near to civil war. If the Larne gunrunners pre WW1 had not imported arms the subsequent Howth gunrunners would not have acted. 1916 may never have happened or indeed The Curragh Mutiny. The book demolishes many efforts to play down the Loyalist guerrillas by their nationalist opponents. But the political failure of the UVF and UDA is a sign of a superior attitude by the Democratic Unionist Party in particular. They forget their own founder’s role in the 1966 UVF reinvention in an ideological sense. In a future cycle of violence if it does happen ( hopefully not) the UVF will no doubt appear again.Along with Deadly Divisions which Henry McDonald co-wrote on the history of the INLA any keen student of Ireland’s modern history is a must read!
