It works on battery. How to operate -- you pull off the protective cover, turn it on (press one of its two buttons), the display screen will read "0". Then dip the probe end into your water, press and hold the 2nd button which takes the TDS reading, and it will beep very quietly to let you know it is done (this takes a second or two). Release the 2nd button, withdraw the meter from the water, and see the TDS reading which is held on the screen for viewing. On the reverse side of the meter there's a chart that tells you what range your reading would fall in, and what it means. (That is expressed in terms of drinking water but if you want it for other purposes such as hydroponics or whatever, you will know the number you want to see so you can adjust your water). I bought mine after doing a fair bit of comparison research, and found the company is solid, and this model has been produced since 2011. It's their basic inexpensive but very reliable no-frills meter and if I dropped mine on its head tomorrow, I'd buy this same exact one to replace it with. One last thing (in my case important, maybe yours also): If you forget to turn it off, it will turn itself off automatically so you don't blow through battery.

Warranty? At $16, it’s essentially disposable. That said, mine has been working >2 years.

Can this meter be recalibrated? Is this done with a screwdriver?

1) Select a NIST traceable standard solution. TDS meters are most accurate when calibrated as close as possible to the sample to be tested. For best results, calibrate at 77°F. 2) Following the same instructions for testing water, measure the TDS level of the solution . If the reading is within 2% of the solution, no adjustment is necessary. If the reading is not within 2%, use a mini-screwdriver to adjust: 3) Insert the screwdriver into the small hole on the rear of the meter - make sure the screwdriver seats evenly into the groove, and try to keep the meter vertical. 4) Gently turn the screw until your reading matches the solution (within 2%). Clockwise for up, counterclockwise for down. 5) Very carefully and gently remove the screwdriver - the adjustment is very sensitive and removing the screwdriver too quickly can cause the reading to jump. 6) Once the reading is correct, keep the meter in the solution and press the "Hold" button. Allow the reading to hold for approximately 10 seconds to stabilize. 7) Remove the meter from the solution and shake the meter to remove any drops of solution from the probes and casing. 8) Turn the meter off, wait a moment, then turn on again. 9) Repeat step (2) to verify the reading. If the reading is not accurate, repeat the calibration.
