1916 is the one hundred year anniversary of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland. The uprising was the armed insurrection that started the process that eventually led to Irish Independence from Great Britain and the partition of the island of Ireland into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Rising was led by the Irish Republican Brotherhood and lasted for approximately six days before being suppressed by British forces. The most fighting took place at the General Post Office GPO in Dublin. A heavy handed response by the British and execution of the ringleaders; Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke , Sean Mac Dermott, Joseph Mary Plunkett, Eamonn Ceannt, and Thomas MacDonagh, led to swaying of public opnion towards republicanism and eventually to independance.
