Yes, you can use this set with eight year old kids.

Q: Will the house be ok outside?

It might be ok in a sheltered area, but we had to add glue all over it

Q: Are the strings already attached to the chimes or do you have to loop it thru and is it easy?

You have to attach them and it is sort of difficult. I would use different string than what was sent

It comes with 2 bird houses and 2 wind chimes that attached to the houses. So maybe thats why they call it a 4 pack? Four separate pieces to color and decorate. 🤷♀️
