initial review. upon opening package.The canvas roll is good quality. The steel makes a high pitched tink sound when hit, very hard, and set firm in the ash handles.The gouges are heavy duty. Will be good for carving hardwoods. They come beveled at about 23 degrees unfinished and will need quite a bit of work to get them in carving condition. The handles are comfortable but could be a little bit larger diameter, my preference, if you use a mallet.As a final note. I like them, but I don't mind refining the cutting edges. They will do well for all the hard hickory I have to work with. If I had softer wood. I would be looking for a different set. Very nice for the price.

These gouges are of VERY poor quality. Very bad grinds and the steel is very bad. I am a knife maker and I know quality steel and a quality heat treat and these are absolute garbage!!! Buy premium grade gouges made in USA, Switzerland, Germany, France and Canada and you will save money in the long run. Spend once, Cry once.

Been carving for years these are good value

Wood: nice ash handles. I examined each handle and found the blades set securely within the handle: no wobble.Metal: Each chisel is fashioned using a nice solid piece of metal and it appears that they will be able to hold up fine when carving by hands and/or with mallet.Chisel Tips: One, maybe two will need a miniscule amount of “squaring” on the tip but these corrections are no problem and in all honestly would not affect their usage; it’s just me being my usual snickety self. Of course, for me they are never quite sharp enough but I enjoy sharpening; it’s just how I roll. :o)Overall, I give this set a high rating for my initial assessment and I will edit this review once I put them to use and will share those findings, as well.Edit: One chisel (#12 V 6mm) , although set nicely in handle, was pretty much worthless due to angle and the offset groove which required grinding it to a shape that it would work... somewhat. Fortunately, I have others (other brands) that will work well in it's place.Never heard from the seller the additional item offered under the product description, i.e. 2 sharpening stones which is able to keep the blade sharp. 6 chisels: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4" 2 sharpening stones: 240 and 1000 grit and one wooden storage box. I have noticed that these additional items are no longer listed under the product description. At lease they took the time to do that!Minus 2 stars
