Q: is the ball removable without unscrewing it? what it the distance between screws on center?

the housing is 2 pieces. you can remove the outer portion that holds the ball. it can be removed by removing 2 small retaining screws and the outer part twists to the left to unlock and remove it from the stern mounted base. the base mounting screws are center to center are 2-7/16"

The seal ball seals to the base of the seal-ball scupper and not to your drain holes.. I have been using these for several years and they work great..
