Gefilte Fish: What Else Do You Need To Know
Many years ago, when I was just a preteen (I'm almost 80 now), I asked my Grandma Freydl how you made Gefilte fish. My immigrant Grandma told me, in Yiddish, "You buy it in a jar". Coming from Grandma, who was a great cook, and had run "Restuarantski Solomianski" in Poland, I decided to take her advice. This Gefilte fish has a pleasant, mild flavor, is packed in a jellied broth (which I rinse off) with a few carrot slices. It is a rare treat that I buy only a few times a year. If you want to know what Gefilte Fish is, it is oblong shaped fish meatballs which are about the size of the palm of your hand. Go Ahead, as Grandma would say "Ess, Ess" (Eat, Eat).

The two jars with this Gefilte Fish were packed extremely carefully (probably at the Manischewitz factory). The "Best By" date on the jars was somewhere in October of 2024 (and I received the jars in March of 2022). The taste of the fish was okay, and the taste of the broth was better than okay. The broth was not jelled, by the way, just liquid. I cannot compare the taste of this Gefilte Fish with the tastes of other Gefilte Fishes available on Amazon; it was probably about three or four years since I ate any of them. P.S. All these Gefilte Fishes which are sold in jars should be called, I think, "Nongefilted" Gefilte Fish, because the Gefilte Fish is a stuffed fish, and in jars we receive only the stuffing (and the broth). It was a lifetime ago when I ate the real Gefilte Fish, made by my grandmother. She boiled fish (carp usually) that long that even the bones of the fish were eatable after that boiling. And fish was stuffed, inside the skin of carp, and it was eaten with the horseredish with beets. I have no idea whether the real Gefilte Fish, the stuffed one, is made and sold today... Maybe in some restaurants?

Makes A Great Snack
Was over a friend's house. Tried it and really liked it. Now I keep a couple of jars at the house for a great snack.
