Q: Are these pretty soft or are they hard leather?

These have a nice soft and slightly elastic feel to them not like raw leather. When I say elastic I mean they feel like they have some “give” to them.

Q: Can you remove the buckles easily?

Nope it how u adjust to fit your horse!

Q: Do the reins have grips/rubber, or just plain smooth leather?

The rein does not have any grips/rubbers it is just plain.

Q: I'm looking to get these for barrel racing! Is that a good idea? How short are they when they are on the highest hole?

These rains are very soft and comfortable. I don’t honestly know how short they are on the highest hole I want to say 7 feet. It might say in the information somewhere. As for whether or not they are good in barrel racing I could not honestly say I just enjoy a good trail ride myself.
