Dates: A Global History

Amazing Author. Always teaches something new through her writing.
One of my favourite little food book series but also Nawal Nasrallah is one of my favourite authors. It was double the excitement to read a book dedicated purely on dates but also to know that the author was Nawal Nasrallah. Her love about what she does and how she writes, is so well transmitted through the pages. Even though I took a deep dive into the world of Mediterranean cuisine for a lifetime now, I still learnt a lot of new information by just reading this little book. If you love cooking North African, Mediterranean, Middle-East foods etc, dates are an important, essential, historic ingredient and it's good to learn more about a certain ingredient. Thank you Nawal Nasrallah once again for the happiness you gave me through your writing.

Delightful Dates
This global history of dates is a must read for any food historian. I love that she came to the desert in California to see the dates grown in the Palm Springs area, Coachella Valley. Dates have antioxidants that make them heart healthy. New reports of nutrition show that what was previously taken for vitamin A has now been found to be polyphenols antioxidants that protect your heart. The back cover states that they were taken to stave off scurvy but actually they were taken on trips because they have the longest shelf life. They also have no Vitamin C which is the only type of antioxidant that can prevent scurvy. All the antioxidants in dates are polyphenols which have more antioxidant capacity that vitamins C, E or A. It took modern research to distinguish these compounds. If you love the history you will enjoy this delightfully written book.
