If you are looking for both diverse characters & titles geared to older emerging readers...
In this combination of two previously published novels by acclaimed Canadian and Ojibway writer, two stories tell stories of survival of young, Native men. The first, Him Standing, is a story that uses magical realism to reconnect Lucas Smoke with the forgotten legends of his heritage. Lucas is living in the city, making his way as a deeply talented carver. He is approached by the enigmatic Gareth Knight who commissions him to carve a spirit mask. Immediately, he is pulled into a frightening dream world that connects him with an evil that consumes him as he works. But through his connection with his girlfriend, Amy One Sky, and an artist named Whitebird, he learns the lessons of his ancestors to help him fight the force that seeks to destroy him. This is a classic good verses evil tale told in a direct and engaging voice, geared to more mature emerging and reluctant readers. Also for the same audience is the novella The Next Sure Thing, a story about young Cree Thunderboy, who has an uncanny talent for picking the winning horses at the track. He is ensnared by a mobster who threatens him and his family and friends if he does not deliver. Cree uses the same skills to outwit the one who controls him. Connections to Native heritage are only vague in this tale, and many of the characters are one dimensional (and all male). Taking center stage is horse racing, and the reader is drawn into the fascinating complexities—and dangers—of gambling and crime. Very good choice for high school emerging readers...
