Bone: Coda 25th Anniversary

Not as expected
Ok, so shipping was pretty much the next day, which made the 9-year old who paid for it extremely excited. The second he got home he was hopping on the couch (pretty much in time to me yelling at him to stop jumping on the couch) as he opened the package. His joy turned to dismay and tears as he quickly realized that over half the book was basically a history of how Jeff Smith created the Bone universe. For my teen, this is awesome and interesting. To a 9-year old, that's the equivalent of kicking his pets, burning his toys, and eating all his candy. So BUYERS BEWARE - this is not another Bone book. It's like a "making of" with 40-ish pages of new story and that's it.I don't blame Jeff, Amazon, or the publisher for this. If we did research we would have figured that out. Sadly, this is a lesson in buyers' remorse and we're all paying the price.Upside is one of said distraught 9-year-old's brothers offered to buy the book off him so at least he didn't feel like he wasted his money. But we'll see if it helps with the devastation.(Yes, he's a bit dramatic, but also a huge fan)

Strictly Intended for the Most Devoted of Fans
Bone: Coda is essentially an inside look at the creation of Bone, from Jeff Smith's earliest childhood doodles of the characters to his pivotal alliance with Scholastic, a powerful publishing company that wisely convinced him to reprint the books with full-color illustrations (thus vastly increasing the series' sales among children). Broken into sections, the book is part thank you letter to fans and friends and collaborators, part history lesson concerning the birth of the indie comics scene (and its evolution into a viable, commercially accepted art form), and part literary analysis as seen through the sage lens of co-author Stephen Weiss. Oh, and there's also that "superfluous" (as actually stated on the back cover) new chapter about the Bone cousins, too.Clearly, this book is not intended for everyone. The new Bone story is fun, but the rest is exactly as stated above - Smith waxing nostalgic about the Bone's development or Weiss stripping the series down to its barest pieces, whether Lord of the Rings or Greek Mythology. More disappointing, however, is the self-congratulatory tone everything comes packaged in; while Smith is unsurprisingly elated by his masterwork's hard won successes, Weiss is similarly infatuated with the series, even likening it to classics such as The Catcher and the Rye and calling it "the first American epic of this century." Hyperbole or truth? You be the judge.Either way, there's nothing truly momentous or outstanding here. At its core, the book is just a printed pat on the back for Smith and his cohorts, and outside a few interesting tidbits and anecdotes, there's truly little to savor here. So, if you love Bone and are eager to know every minute detail about its storied past, snatch this up and enjoy it for what it is. But for everyone else, this might be the one volume of the series that can be safely skipped.

Delightful supplement to a great book!
Bone is brilliant! I got this for the new story, as I have one of the original hardcover all in one volumes in my collection already. I won't spoil anyone's fun by describing the plot. Suffice to say this is a pleasurable supplement to one of the best books, not just one of the best comics, I have read in my life.

My son loved it
While this only adds an addition chapter to the thick Bone collection, my son (now fourteen years old) thought that its contents were great.

Great fun!!!
I’ve been a fan of Mr. Smith for many years. I read THORN when it was in The Ohio State Lantern. I cannot rememenber did Thorn go topless, big deal on campus at the time.

I have order the big book of Bone, which ...
I have order the big book of Bone, which Jeff Smith calls the One. There are some light moments as well as some serious moments.

Only For Serious Fans
This is not worth buying if you just like the original series and want more. There is no more. The book is almost entirely filled with commentary on the the creators, the comic book/graphic novel industry, and a dry explanation of what makes BONE a great series, even though you already knew.Buying this is like buying the 'how they made it' video that usually comes as a bonus feature with the DVD.I am a real fan that owns all the rest, so I don't regret this. The back cover contains a coloured image of the bones and thorn walking past abbey road dressed as the Beatles. Thorn is John, Fone is Paul, and that alone is to die for.

this is great. The story is short
If you are already a fan of Bone, this is great. The story is short, and rather inconsequential (but fun!). I wouldn't recommend this to someone who hasn't already read the series, and if you've read the series, you're not going to pass up an opportunity to read more new content and additional reading

Excellent book
The story was short, but sweet. An excellent read, though I wish there would be a sequel depicting what happened after the Bone cousins returned to Boneville.
