Nerissa and Ruaidri
Unique and different. A lot of Revolutionary history which adds excitement. Characters are strong. Emotions were well defined and represented. The Duke's character a bit weak compared to the other books in the city. He came across less cunning and more bully.

Very adventurous romance and full of laughter. To be kidnapped and still find out that you get to love someone, makes a great book.

The best of the series
By far, this was my absolute favorite of the entire de Montforte Brothers series. Nerissa is probably the most well-rounded character of the entire cast throughout all five books. She is the youngest, but very aware of herself and what she wants. She should be, really, considering that her eldest brother has spent most of her life keeping her in a gilded cage. Lucien wants to protect her, but ultimately he just ends up confining her in a life she isn't passionate about. She has no real choices of her own, and is often frustrated. While her brother, Andrew's, latest invention makes a big bang, Nerissa finds herself tumbling - literally - into an unexpected adventure. Despite the terrifying nature of waking up to find herself a prisoner on a foreign naval vessel, Nerissa handles herself with great aplomb. Truly, I feel Lucien would be proud of her if he would just take a moment to really see her as a person (as opposed to the china doll she often feels like). Her grace and poise under stressful circumstances catches the attention and earns the admiration of the vessel's Captain, Ruaidri. As he and Nerissa spend time together over their days on the ship, they learn a great deal about each other, and have a subtle growth of character within themselves.I especially loved the almost insidious nature of the changes. It felt much more romantic to me than a whirlwind escapade lasting a week or so. This story read as a wonderful, slow burn. The only thing keeping this from a five-star review is the way Lucien's character backpedaled. At the end of his story in the fourth book, he seemed to have grown and learned a great deal through his trials. Yet in this book, he is exactly the same domineering, high-handed, inconsiderate brute he was in the very first book. What happened to his growth? He even travels all the way to America to accost a man on Nerissa's "behalf," without ever once stopping to speak to her about it! Considering that is a six-week journey, I just felt like all of the progress made over four books was lost in this character. That was disappointing.Aside from that one thing, this was one of my favorite books of the whole year. I highly, highly recommend it!

Highly readable adventure, but ...
This is a romantic adventure, or an adventure romance, set on the high seas. There's a lot to enjoy on the adventure side of things. A gripping plot and a page turning style. Harmon writes well and she has done her research: the 'wooden world' of the navy isn't easy to write about convincingly, but she does it.For me, the romance side didn't quite work, and that was due to some issues I had with Captain O'Devir, the hero. I'm not a fan of coercion in romance, or deceitfulness in a main character. It's clear that we, the readers, are meant to forgive the Captain for kidnapping Lady Nerissa, and for lying to her about his past. Why I'm supposed to forgive him, I'm not sure. Because he's superficially charming, good looking, Irish (in the most stereotypical and fetishising way, but that's a side issue), American, not upper-class? But I never quite liked or trusted him, he remained a kidnapper and a liar, and his actions denied Nerissa any meaningful agency. She was coerced into proximity with him and then deceived and manipulated into love. He is more villain than hero and this is a fatal flaw where the beating heart of a romance novel should be.Oh and as Harmon is an American writer, the villains are English. Of course (eyeroll).

Rather a winner
I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did, it was a free read and I took a chance based on other positive reviews. I can see why others liked it too. It’s something of an adventure and zips along; I liked and sympathised with Nerissa. The Irish accented dialogue from Ruarai is at times very corny with ‘ye’ and ‘lass’ flung in sporadically and some modern idioms but I got over it and got on with the escape into the drama and the sentiment.Give it a try

The last of the de Montforte siblings gets their HEA
Nerissa gets her well deserved HEA. After the events in the earlier books effectively broke up the betrothal between herself and Perry, Nerrisa is drifting through life. Following an accident at a demonstration of her brother Andrew’s explosive she is abducted by Ruaidri O’Devir with the intention of obtaining the method of creating it for the American revolutionary forces. The love between the two gradually develops and Nerrisa discovers a freedom she has never experienced.
