Q: Are they quiet? I want to put them on a pair of boots that are noisy when I walk

They didn't seem to add any additional noise when placed on a set of high-heel cowboy boots; in fact I believe it made them somewhat less noisy.

Q: Has anyone found a screw that works instead of the nails? What size? I find the nails to be a bit awkward.

Yes. Get some #2 x 1/2" brass flat head Phillips wood screws from your hardware store. I use a variable speed drill with very a small Phillips drilling bit. Much easier than trying to find a hard surface for holding the shoe securely in an upside down position

I recommend the nails. Shoe goo is not a cement. Use barge instead.
