The Bourne Ultimatum [Blu-ray]

I always liked the early Jason Bourne movies because they were a new take on the spy genre. Matt Damon as Bourne was a rouge agent suffering from PTSD and trying to end the CIA program that turned him into a killer. What set the series apart from others was that it tried to show more realistic action scenes. There’s no gadgets. There’s no jumping out of airplanes, etc. For instance Damon confronts a killer in an apartment with small confined rooms. It makes the fighting more intense and it’s drawn out rather than being over in a just a few punches. Another little thing I liked was how Damon would play with the CIA officers looking for him. In one scene, David Strathairn is out in the field trying to corner Damon while talking to him on the phone. Straithairn offers to meet to which Damon replies that if he was in his office they would be talking face to face right then. It also highlighted the power of the modern surveillance state where the government can follow and observe people almost everywhere. The theme of the whole Bourne franchise was that he was trying to stop the abuses that would naturally come from holding so much power. That along with the action makes Bourne Ultimatum a game changer in secret agent movies.

The third, and alas, the final installment of the Bourne series has landed, and what a landing it was. The strongest of the three installments (the first two being excellent in their own right) propels the viewer through almost non-stop, high-tense action, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. For those who have missed either of the first two motion pictures ... and shame on you if you did;), it's a must to see at least the second installment (The Bourne Supremacy) in order not to get totally lost in this one. Do yourself a favor and see both fine films (The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy) before seeing The Bourne Ultimatum.As with the other two films, The Bourne Ultimatum was shot at several different exotic locals (a trademark of this series). "Ultimatum" starts where "Supremacy" left off. Actually, it sort of spans The Bourne Supremacy, telling us what transpired at the end of that 2nd installment that we did not see.Now, when I mean non-stop action, that doesn't mean it's the entire picture. The story of Bourne's identity and his role in "Treadstone" (a CIA Black-Ops program) comes full circle and the scenes inside the CIA (especially the Pamela Landy character, played wonderfully by Joan Allen) are as intense as they are interesting. More important still, nothing is telegraphed in the entire series. We don't know what is going to happen, all the way to (and including) the end. Also, the character Nicky Parsons (played nicely by Julia Stiles) is expanded in the third episode, adding another interesting branch to the Bourne saga.And one cannot (or should not) underrate the performance of Matt Damon in yet another demanding Bourne role. While he puts the "E" in exciting fight sequences, he also puts the "I" in intelligence. His character is thinking every second of every day and has a purpose in everything he does (which is not always known by the audience at the time). Damon brings this out (often subtly) in each film, making Bourne the super-agent of super-agents, but never in an unbelievable or plastic (James Bond) type of way (not to say the Bond series wasn't good at times, but Bond is pretty light fare -- almost comic book in depth -- compared to the Bourne series).This is a hard-hitting series, intelligently written and wonderfully acted and directed. And as had been said by many people, many times, this is exactly what a secret agent movie should be (and very rarely is). The only problem I have with this series is the over-use of the hand-held camera technique. While not as jerky or blurry as the second episode, it can still be distracting at times. However, the use of the hand-held camera tends to put the audience in the middle of everything, giving it that extra intensity and realism not found in most films. And believe me, you will be right in the middle of the action in this brilliant installment ... and at times, amazingly so. This is one heck of a series and one heck of a movie.Because this film essentially completes the trilogy, and I feel it is the strongest of the series (part 1 being very good, part 2 even better, while part 3 the best), I rate this installment the highest of the three. Between 1 and 10, I feel The Bourne Ultimatum deserves a solid 9.Sadly, I think this is the logical end to this series, and for that I am somewhat bummed that we won't see another installment. But hey, this is Hollywood where ANYTHING can happen. I can only hope if Hollywood reprises the Bourne role (and Hollywood is quite renown for doing this), they don't muck it up, and will maintain the integrity and excitement of the other three films. And no, I don't want anyone but Matt Damon playing the lead role, nor anyone but Paul Greengrass directing it.

Before I begin, I'd like to make one thing perfectly clear. This is the third movie in a series. If you haven't seen the first two, you will be lost, especially since this one picks up moments after the climax of the last one. Ready? Then let's begin.Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is injured and on the run. The Moscow police are after him because of the car chase that ended the last film. When cornered, Bourne explains that he has to find out who is after him and who he is once and for all before he escapes.The action skips ahead six weeks. Bourne has once again slipped under the radar. The latest flashbacks in his memory are connected to his early training at the CIA. But his motive is the death of his girlfriend. He may have caught the person responsible, but he wants to know why that person was sent after him in the first place.Meanwhile, British reporter Simon Ross (Paddy Considine) is writing a series on Jason Bourne. He has a secret source in the CIA. And he's attracted the attention of Bourne as well as Noah Vosen (David Strathairn), the head of a secret program at the CIA. Who is Simon's source? Will it lead Bourne to the secrets of his past? Or will Noah have everyone is site killed first?I'll admit I am not the biggest fan of the first two movies. I found them overly complex and hard to follow with some big plot holes. But this one was actually straight forward, so I was able to sit back and enjoy. Yet you do need to have seen those first two, and recently, because they weave in lots of plot points from those films.Now that's not to say the movie was boring. There are lots of great action scenes here. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. Heck, an extended scene in Tangier had my stomach in knots.One complaint that holds true is the lack of character development. With the exception of returning characters, we really don't get to know anyone. Of course, that does make it easier to root for our heroes. And this isn't a complaint about the acting, but it was all wonderful as always.My biggest complaint is the shaky camera work. It makes it harder to follow the action at times. I wish this fad in camera work would end because I don't think I will ever appreciate it.This is the first film in the franchise to make me interested in reading the books, so I'd say it was a success. There's always a possibility they will come back for a fourth film, but if not, this ending should satisfy fans of the series.

Bourne never fails to deliver!

Another action packed movie. This movie is awesome because it's mostly all action. I also like how it literally picks up right where part 2 left off.

Ein kleines Vorfazit und einige Infos:Braucht die Welt Jason Bourne? Ja Können 138 Millionen US $ Budget ein gutes Einspielergebnis bringen? Ja, 224 Millionen in den USA, 450 Millionen ca. weltweit, reicht doch oder? Wenn ein 1,78 Meter großer, am 8.10.1970 geborener Schauspieler der bis jetzt nicht viel gutes zusammen gebracht hat, 15 Mille für einen Film verdient dann muß er doch gut sein oder? Nicht immer, hier aber schon. Besser als Der Schakal", die Neuverfilmung ist er eigentlich, ungefähr so rasant wie Ronin, nicht so charmant wie Teil 1 oder effizient wie Teil 2, mehr Action als Teil 1 + 2 zusammen, der Faktor Liebe wurde hier weggelassen, Patriotismus kommt nicht vor, der CIA ist meistens der Böse aber nicht alle, Joan Allen ist eine gute Schauspielerin, Matt Damon ist für die Rolle geboren, und erst am Ende, in den letzten 20 % des Filmes erfahren wir erst ein bißchen über das Geheimnis von Jason Bourne, wer er ist, woher er kommt und warum er bei dem Programm Treadstone dabei ist.Übrigens ein kurzes Foto von Donald Rumsfeld ist zu sehen, der ist so was wie der König der USA. Wer das ist?Donald Henry Rumsfeld (geboren am 9. Juli 1932 in Chicago, Illinois) ist ein US-amerikanischer Politiker (Republikaner), ehemaliger US-Verteidigungsminister und war der älteste und dienstälteste Amtsinhaber im Verteidigungsministerium in der Geschichte der USA.Wieso bei Jason Bourne nach einem Auto Crash seine Platzwunde auf der Linken Seite verschwand und wieder auftauchte dürfte ein Fehler der Regie sein. Die ich aber allerdings loben muß für endlich eine gute, halbwegs verständliche, und sehr gut gefilmte und durchgeführte Produktion wo man gut mit kommt, wo man nicht lachen muß weil was Blödes vor kommt, wo nicht unbedingt geliebt und geküsst wurde, wo zwar viel Action ist aber nicht unbedingt das Hauptaugenmerk auf Action getrimmt wurde und wo eine sehr gute Kamera ist, die mir teilweise ein bißchen zu viel verwackelt war, aber dennoch sehr gute Szenen gefilmt wurden, sehr gute Effekte zu sehen waren alles im Bereich des menschlich möglichen.Bei einer kurzen Szene als Nicky Parson den CIA kontaktieren will, sieht man gar kein CIA Logo auf Ihrem Laptop. Das ist doch eigenartig oder? Schließlich arbeitet sie ja dort und loggt sich ein. Und ich bilde mir ein als Pamela Landry bei einer Szene was gefaxt hat, und reingelegt hat, kam mir vor als ob was mit den Seiten falsch war und ja, es sah aus als ob sie ein ganzes Heft reinlegte, statt den einzelnen Seiten, aber dass ist nur Kinderkram. Wie z.b. Neil oder Neal Daniels, wieso 2 Schreibweisen, der ein und derselben Person?So jetzt zurück zum Film.Ein bißchen von der Handlung:Der Film findet endlich einen 3. Teil, das habe ich mir damals gar nicht denken können, also dass der so schnell kommt, und hier fängt alles schon sehr spannend an, gleich nach Teil 2. Dort wo der 2. Teil aufhört geht es weiter, denn JASON BOURNE (Matt Damon) ist in Moskau. Er flüchtet vor der Polizei, und er hat noch die Schusswunden von Teil 2. (Ach ja, man kann sich ja einstimmen und vor Teil 3, die beiden vorherigen Teile ansehen). Natürlich flüchtet er, und das tut er dann den ganzen Film.Im Abschluss der Trilogie stöbert BOURNE so lange herum bis er SIMON ROSS findet, einen Journalisten. Er ist sehr nahe auf der Spur von Treadstone, dem geheimen CIA-Programm, dass er entdeckt hat, er wird bald wissen wieso er zu einer perfekten Tötungsmaschine gemacht wurde. Dieser SIMON, den er beschützen muß, wird leider vor seinen Augen getötet. Der hätte geheime Informationen gehabt, die für JASON sehr wichtig wären. Und das ist nicht alles, denn der CIA Chef EZRA KRAMER (Scott Glenn) selber hat ihn für den Abschuss freigegeben.NOAH VOSEN (David Strathairn) ist die ganze Zeit auf der Jagd nach JASON, selbst NICKY PARSON (Julia Stiles) will er tot sehen. Nur PAMELA LANDY (Joan Allen) ist noch so einigermaßen sicher vor NOAH, denn der wittert überall Gefahr, keinem vertraut er, jeder für ihn ist in Kontakt mit JASON.Von London über Madrid, von Tanger nach New York, und in Paris, überall spielt sich die Geschichte ab, 108 Minuten lange. Vom Tod von MARIA KREUTZ (Franka Potente) die in Indien erschossen wurde, bis über das Treffen von Ihrem Bruder MARTIN (Daniel Brühl) geht die Story sehr verworrene Wege, doch am Ende wird BOURNE siegen oder?Ein bißchen wieder zurück zu den Casts, den Leuten zum Film und zu meiner Meinung:Selten das ein Actionfilm sogar Frauen gefällt, meiner Freundin gefiel er gut, sie lehnte bei mir herum, krallte sich wie ein notgeiler Vampir kurz vor dem Abkratzen an meinen Hals, wir aßen ne Menge ungesundes Futter und hatten Spaß an dem Film, der sehr gut in Szene gesetzt wurde. Was mich am meisten ärgert, obwohl Ärgern vielleicht nicht der richtige Ausdruck ist, ist das ganze verwackelte Zeug. Während der Film so ähnlich wie Mission Impossible 3" abläuft, aber glücklicherweise nicht so ultracool auf einen Hauptdarsteller zugeschnitten wurde, ist der Film meiner Meinung nach ein bißchen amateurhaft aber anspruchsvoll gedreht worden was aber jetzt keineswegs heißt dass er kein Popcornfilm ist, ne ist er, aber nicht so wie ich es mir vorstellte, den Teil 1+2 gefiel mir besser, doch der hier war wirklich spannend, und vom ganzen Thema her, einfach super, dass man eine Story die mal Robert Ludlum schrieb und von Richard Chamberlain gespielt wurde in Der Agent ohne Namen" auf 3 Teile aufteilen kann.Was ich sehr gut fand, also vom Künstlerischen her, die ganzen Close Up Aufnahmen, wenn es um eine wichtigen Dialog ging, oder die Aufnahmen die in Großbild zu sehen waren, wenn es wichtig war auch war der Film von der Kameramässigen Seite her so in Szene gesetzt, dass man Kleinigkeiten als wichtig sehen konnte, wenn es welche waren, und auch viele andere Personen rund um Bourne gut zur Geltung kamen.Vielleicht hat der Regisseur Paul Greengrass nach seinem letzten für mich langweiligen Film Flug 93" Authentizität üben können, und hier den Film gedreht, ich bin froh dass es so ein guter Regisseur war, denn der Film wirkt in keinem Fall langweilig oder dämlich. Sicher ist er und wird er nie sein, ein Oscaranwärter, aber wenn es einen Preis für realistische Action gibt, reiht er sich in die Top Ten nach Ronin" ein.Was ich gut fand ist wie David Strathairn in Szene gesetzt wurde, denn der wirkt als Killer vom Schreibtisch sehr authentisch und vielleicht hat der Regisseur mit einer Kakerlake samt Kamera in den geheimen Räumen des CIA herumgeschnüffelt um zu checken wie es da wirklich abgeht, dass dort ein Menschenleben echt 0 zählt.Vielleicht kann es einem sauer aufstoßen dass einige gut eingebrachte Flashbacks etwas lästig sind, und das ständige Wechseln der Locations einfach unglaubwürdig wirkt, denn Jason ist nie im Flieger, nie am Klo, hat nie Darmgrippe oder Scheißerei, er hat nie Kopfweh, Migräne, nie ist er Notgeil oder müde, er schläft nie und ist agiler als James Bond, er ist nie lustig, immer ruhig, will Nicky Parsons nie an den Pelz gehen also den zwischen den Beinen - hehe - er hat sich nichts gebrochen, segelt und fliegt von Haus zu Haus wie Spiderman auf Speed, wirkt aber alles sehr echt, verstaucht sich nichts was lange anhaltet, überlebt Stürze, Unfälle, Autocrashes, und eine 2 Meter entfernte Autoexplosion, er fährt verdammt gut mit einem Motocross Motorrad, das wie bei der Show - Masters of Dirt - wirkt, er trauert nicht über seine Freundin Franka Potente die ja in Indien erschossen wurde, er betet nicht, er ist nicht still man sieht alles fast am Tag, und er ist dauernd gut drauf, also gut auf Flucht.So was wünscht sich doch jede große Managementfirma oder? Ein wahrer perfekter Mitarbeiter, ja und Matt Damon als Schauspieler passt hervorragend ins Geschehen, der Film ist nicht unnötig lustig, man hat oft aber den Anschein, he wo ist der warum und wo, wieso, aber das ist egal, ein bißchen Hirn abschalten kann man schon ruhig. Kameramann Oliver Wood hat schon bei Teil 1+2 die Kamera geführt, wieso hier nicht auch. Ja schnell war es, die erstklassige Besetzung in den Nebendarstellern war unwichtig, alles ist auf Matt Damon zugeschnitten aber alles wirkt hier sehr gut, schnell und saftig und bis auf einige Fehler muß ich dem Film eine gute Wertung geben.Da war noch ein Kampf in einem Badezimmer mit einem Marokkanischen Attentäter, der wirkte gut, denn ein richtiger Kampf geht so lange bis der andere tot ist, ja sonst war der Film blutleer, aber wo der kämpfen lernte, ja das möchte wohl jeder Junge

love this series

A fantasy spy story. Excellent as a thriller, but just sit back for a moment, and realize these stories are not possible. I find myself wondering how Matt Damon can travel without luggage, and always look impeccably dressed , and wonder where and when he takes time out to sleep, eat and go to the washroom. Never mind - just suspend your disbelief, and revel in the intercontinental confusion without thinking, I'm glad Matt Damon is coming back as Jason Bourne - of course I will watch it.

but I think the best of the series is past. Everything since Supremacy hasn't grabbed me the same way, tho I like this character enough to keep watching the movies to see where he ends up. Arrived in good time and great condition.
