Another Brilliant, Usable WD Product
I have been an exclusive user of Western Digital rotating magnetic drives for over 15 years because, in all that time, I've never had one of their products fail. Not one. My two most important considerations for any storage product are reliability and then performance as I work with digital video, images and audio. I cannot afford to lose any of my files or I'll be the target of my clients' wrath and I cannot afford that. I like my clients and strive to keep them happy. In all the years using WD, I've had more than 20 WD drives, internal and external, without a single failure. My backup regime is fairly rigorous, with multiple backups of every file, and I rely upon WD to keep my files safe.Backup is the reason for my latest Passport purchase, which brings my total of these drives now to four. And there soon will be a fifth which will bring my total Passport storage to 15 terrabytes. They serve me well beyond reliability by their simplicity, size and relative speed. Speed for drives of this type is excellent, however they would not be my first choice as as the online storage for a project in production/post-production. For that need I use a 3TB WD Black (7200 RPM) drive which is their top line for speed and performance. The Passport performance is at least a step lower than the Black. When I investigated what drives WD put inside their My Book products a few years ago, it appeared that they were using 3.5", 3600 RPM drives which is OK for HD video from a DSLR. I'm moving to working with 4K, RAW (uncompressed) video shortly. I suspect that the Passport would be too slow for my needs.Bringing this discussion back to ground, where most of you likely are, the Passport is an exceptional, all around, portable disk. It's small enough to easily fit in almost any bag and the hard drives are laptop drives which are designed to get knocked around without issue. Here's one final "top tip" that works for me. Each of my Passports are different colors which makes it easy to pick the drive that I need from the stack on my desk without having to look at the label. It might seem a little silly but anything that speeds up my workflow is a plus.Buy one of these. Buy two. They're small and inexpensive.

WD 4TB Red My Passport Portable External...Great drive.
portable and reliable. the ONLY WD usb desktop drive (out of 10) that has failed on me suffered a 3 foot drop while spinning. every other WD usb drive is still working and going strong.. even after having full drive with deletion then using it over again. I love this drive cus it is portable and reliable. i have 3 of these type and at least 7 of the book type., The only con is they spin down when not in use.. so if you call a file from the drive it has to wake up first .. spin up.. and that can take 15 seconds. I also love how they can come in several colors.. i know to grab the red one.. cus that's my move stuff between sites drive.

Great drives, multiple colors to keep types separate!
We use these for monthly backups of multiple 2TB, 3TB and 4TB hard drives on home office and design systems. They even work for small business and recommend them. Used with Acronis or similar scheduling backup programs single or multiple units can be purchased and using a swap-out system data can be preserved and taken off-site to a safety deposit box, off-site storage safe, etc. in case the need arises. Purchased these in 2018 and in Jan 2021 still using these units purchased once a month to backup drives at a home office. Great value for the money. Personally we use the multiple colors to denote which systems the drives go with or in some locations what the drives contain, i.e. multimedia video, documents, confidential files, etc. when recommending a strategy to customers.

Works great for the Xbox one. I'd image it's great as a regular portable external drive.
works great with my xbox one s, plugged it into my PC first and removed all the garbage they stuff it with when they ship. Then plugged it into my xbox and realized I could've skipped that step entirely because the XBOX itself formats the drive. Works like a charm, I now have 80+ games installed and don't have to shuffle my games around when deciding what to play. The other great thing is I can now bring my games with me and not have to install them. It's a bit chunky, that just means it's protected better than the thin sheet of metal on my other external drives. definitely worth the money.

Great product
Great product but the WesternDigital software used to access and manage all of the drive’s features sometime opens up multiple instances of itself in the background which wastes resources thus and slowing the computer down. This is apparently a known issue but it has not been fully addressed or completely fixed.Would buy againUnsure if we would recommend this exact one, probably a more updated version

Good Hard Drive Gone Bad
I bought this hard drive 3 months ago as a replacement for my previous WD 1.5TB HD. Initially, I loved everything about it: it was fast, had tons of storage, the price was great and the color was amazing. Everything worked as advertised until last week, when it stopped letting me safely eject it I initially thought it was my computer acting up, but I noticed that my other two hard drives still worked flawlessly. After a couple days, the computer would not detect the hard drive, even though I could hear the drive spinning and could see the light on the hard drive light up. After narrowing the the issue down to the hard drive itself, I emailed WD's tech support and never received a reply, despite them sending me a case number. Later, I checked to see if WD's warranty would cover data recovery, sadly it does not. WD simply directs it you to some of their "warranty friendly partners" and you get to pay out of pocket for their services. I have always had WD hard drives, and have never had a bad experience with them until now, but after this I will probably not buy another at least until their quality and customer service is up to par.
