This particular book, like all others, is sure to please but a few things are different with the Christmas book. First off there's no "dust cover or jacket" so you do miss out on having one huge image to color, front and back. The next thing that is remarkably different is that the pages themselves are perforated and no images bleed into the binding, big plus score on that. With that in mind there is 1 image per page, making this book significantly "smaller" than all other books. There is a lightly printed graphic on the back of each page which you can most certainly color. These are simple repetitive graphics. The paper is a somewhat off white and of course great heavy stock (I would surmise 100lb stock) that we have all come to love with Johanna's books and artwork. I've been using both Prismacolors as well as Colore' colored pencils (both oil and wax based) and they all work great with this paper. I use various blending methods such as alcohol markers or odorless solvents and the paper stands up to them quite well. The images overall are not as intense or detailed as her other books but lovely none the less. I like the gingerbread house images, there are several, the most overall but there's some other very adorable images and not specific to Christmas but to winter in general. I've been enjoying doing some post Christmas coloring in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone enjoying Johanna's previous work and is a must have for your collection. Review: Beautiful book! - I was going to return this book because I was so busy I didn't get to color any of it before Christmas but I decided to keep it because the pictures are so pretty!

Hooray! Designs are printed on one side of the perforated page – 37 Charming and Festive Christmas Designs
Finally and Hooray! Johanna Basford and her publisher have listened to her fans and printed this beautiful coloring book on one side of the page. Not only that, they have perforated the pages so you can take pages out if you wish to do so. The back of the pages are not neglected either as there is the lightest of gray holiday design patterns. The designs are beautiful and evocative of the holiday season. With everything from Christmas trees to polar bears, ornaments to prancing deer, the designs are instantly recognizable as Ms. Basford's charming style. There are 37 designs which celebrate the Christmas season. Christmas is my favorite holiday and having such a beautiful book of designs to color will help brighten up any dreary, cold days. Not to mention they will be a wonderful way to sit and relax when the holiday season starts becoming more and more hectic. The designs are open and easy to color. This is something that Ms. Basford began in her most recent book (“Magical Jungle”) and I'm pleased to see it once again. It makes it so much easier to use all forms of coloring medium and with the printing on one side, this time it really should be a choice of any coloring book medium. While several designs are set up too appear as two page spreads, only one design actually has elements which spread across two pages (a small garland and a baseboard.) Those elements cross the perforations and spread over the binding. Not a problem as it is so small and each of the pages can easily stand along as a single design. A suggestion for future books might be a fold-out page for the design or two of this nature. That would keep the whole design together and make it that much easier to color. The cover of the book has fold-outs front and back with coloring opportunities on it. I'll be interested to see if the UK version still retains the dust cover as it did with “Magical Jungle”. The attached cover has black line drawings as well as very pretty red, green, and gold foil accents on the front. The cover can be colored, however, it is much smoother in texture than the paper inside the coloring book. The title and presentation pages can be colored as well. I have ordered the UK version of this coloring book. Once it arrives, I will do a comparison of the US versus UK versions. You can look for the comparison in the comments section below. This book is definitely going on my list of family and friend gifts. I can think of several individuals I would love to give it to along with a small set of markers – which we get to use finally with this book. This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring medium I used to test this book and which I generally use for my coloring. 37 – Wonderfully Festive Christmas/Winter Designs by Johanna Basford (this counts the potential two page spreads as separate designs) Printed on one side of the page (did I mention Hooray!!) Paper is heavyweight, ivory, slightly rough and perforated Glue Binding Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page Water-based markers and gel pens leave the slightest of shadows on the back of the page. Gel pens did not bleed through the page but did require a little more drying time. Colored pencils worked well. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with good results. I was able to layer the same color for deeper pigment, layer multiple colors and to blend easily with a pencil style blending stick.

Coloring magic!
Absolutely love Johanna Basford! Her color books are the best! And this book is one of her best! Each page is a wonderful illustration and a Christmas magic. From presents in a sleigh to decorated trees to a Wonderland of Christmas to color. I bought two of these and gave them as gifts. They were very well received and excited to start the coloring journey. It is a nice size book with a lot of pages. Nothing cheap or chintzy about it. Great quality paper heavy quality paper. Not thin pages at all. I get no bleed through at all with my gel pens. I have not use markers in my book. But the pages are high quality so i would not imagine there would be bleed through with markers. Great book. If you are on the fence about purchasing, don’t. You will love it!

Well Done
Paper isn’t as heavy as cardstock but very smooth. Large variety of images that vary between basic and detailed. Pages are sewn into binding; not perforated. Overall theme is stereotypical holiday decorations exclusively…zero emphasis on “Christmas” (Jesus/Nativity scenes, etc). No grayscale or AI images.

This book is so pretty and sweet! It has all of the classic, idealized Christmas elements to make you feel nostalgic and happy about the holidays. I personally like the detailed nature of Johanna Basford's drawings and enjoy that kind of meditative colouring experience more than large, simple illustrations. There's no filler in this book as I have found other Christmas colouring books to have (e.g. the ubiquitous large drawing of a single tree ornament on one page as found in cheapo books, leaving you to fill in the whole thing red or whatever - so boring!!). Every illustration here is interesting and beautiful, and also challenging. There is a 'Color Palette Test Page' at the back and a lovely grey-scale decoration pattern on the back of each colouring page for bleedthrough, but I have yet to have that happen due to the amazing quality of the paper. It just adds to the whole experience of a Johanna Basford colouring book. Such a treat! Another example of her attention to detail is that Ms. Basford alternates holly (red/green) and mistletoe (white/darker green) on the edging and accents so it's not as monochromatic and boring to colour. Just lots of thoughtful elements and lots of fun as well, including a search and find throughout the book of little robin birds that you can locate in each illustration. Adorable and festive! Highly recommended.
